Al Gore Speaks Climate Crisis on 30 Rock

Seeing Al Gore on 30 Rock Thursday night reminded me why he’s the coolest nerd in existence. I worked on An Inconvenient Truth and was duly star-struck by him every time he came into the office — even though there is no need to be.

He is one of the nicest, most polite men ever.

Working on An Inconvenient Truth was a very emotional experience. During the filming and the editing — before the awards and the Nobel Prize — it still was hard to reflect on a world in which Gore wasn’t president. I worked on the section of the film in which he discussed the 2000 election, and would come home nights and cry at how sad it was for everyone — for America, for him, for his family and for me.

In the end he won, big, and with dignity, which is more than most people can say. He won by being himself. He’s long-winded, that’s for sure, but if you take the time to listen to him (which, thankfully, people are now doing), you realize he’s not trying to bore you; he just knows a lot about everything and is really excited about sharing. Sometimes he’s stiff, but sometimes he’s really funny. He’s having fun, which was so evident on 30 Rock that I watched the episode with a smile on my face. He was perfectly himself: suit and (green) tie, using every platform and opportunity to passionately speak on the climate crisis, and delivering his line “a whale is in trouble!” with the proper “wh” pronunciation of “whale.”

As much as I want him to be president, his non-presidency has been incredibly successful. In a lot of ways, by losing the election, he might actually have saved the world.

Note from G Monkie I just watched the 30 Rock show online at NBC, and I think someone over there has been watching G Living, because the main Green Character is Greenzo and has a G on his chest. Hmmm, Could they have gotten that from us? G Living and The GreenZones foundation? Hmmm….
