Alabama Chanin | A Quintessential American Fashion Statement

In an age of homogenization and mass production, it’s refreshing to stumble on a rare gem like this one.
Alabama Chanin is a curious collection of limited-edition jewelry, clothing, home furnishings, accessories, furniture and fabrics for interiors made by locals artisans using a mixture of new, organic and recycled materials. The brainchild of owner/designer Natalie “Alabama” Chanin, she conceived the idea back in 2006, after returning home from many years living abroad.
The one of a kind t-shirts – which Chanin describes as the quintessential American fashion statement – are hand-sewn by local artisans to preserve the state’s long history of garment construction. The website even provides a how-to guide to the art of reverse appliqué (for anyone brave enough to handle a hot iron and a sharp needle).
“Organic” features modern garments with a Southern flair while “Home” offers everything from quirky old-fashioned chandeliers to hand-sewn quilts. My favorite is the jewelry. Made from either Platinum/Sterling Alloy or Gold Vermeil, the designs are robust as they are desirable. I adore the Beetle charm and double chain charm bracelet, which reminds me of fob chains without the yuppie connotations.
A meandering through Alabama Chanin is more than just online shopping, it feels like you’ve experienced Sweet Home Alabama itself. (Not the movie — that was ghastly.)
