Arizona’s Lost Dog Wash Trail

Lions and badgers and hawks, oh yes! Thanks to the Lost Dog Wash Trail Access Area, you’ll be seeing a lot of these animals in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve just outside of Scottsdale, Arizona.
What you won’t see are hoards of people washing their lost dogs. In fact, this is a simple access area with a picnic spot, an interpretive area, group rooms, a small amphitheater and an equestrian area. What’s unique about the Lost Dog Wash Access Area is that you might not even see it at all. One of the main goals of the Area was to blend the building — even the parking lot — as much as possible into the beautiful surrounding desert. Down to the color of the non-toxic paint, the Access Area is shockingly unobtrusive.
The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, according to their website, “is committed to preserving the Sonoran Desert and its Mountains for the benefit of this and all future generations.” Along these lines, the native plants and vegetation that lost their home due to the construction are being replanted and relocated to other parts of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
The Lost Dog Wash Access Area is also an award winning green building. It uses photovoltaic cells to provide electricity as well as rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems to provide water for irrigation. They collect 75,000 gallons a year. That’s a lot of lost dog washes! The Access Area also has foam-flush toilets, which look just like regular toilets but use a fraction of the water.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve plans to expand from 11,000 to 36,000 protected acres and create eight more access areas around the park, all to the high green standards. But, what will they be called? The Sad Cow Milking Station? The De-Clawed Cat Purring Facility? The I Don’t Want To Get Anywhere Near Enough To Know What a Mountain Lion Does Visitor Center? Check back here to find out! Or if you find yourself in Scottsdale, check out the Lost Dog Wash Trail.
