Australia’s Broadcasters Are Launching New “G” Focused Shows

(via theage.com.au) Free-to-air broadcasters are finalising environmentally focused shows, using the “reality TV” format to entice viewers into changing their ways.
SBS and ABC are running similar series of six episodes, each 30-minute “challenges”, that take ordinary Australians and weigh their impact on the globe.
With the help of “eco coach” Tanya Ha, they get their usage to sustainable levels and have their supplies returned. Tanya Ha, is the author of Greeniology, a practical guide that shows people, greenie and non-greenie alike, how to make their homes and lives more sustainable, more comfortable, and healthier and cheaper to run.
Previous environmental shows, she said, had been “depressing, no hope, end-of-the-world stuff”, without engaging viewers as they needed to. But the time is right, she believes.
“There’s two hot topics in the world right now: terrorism and climate change.”
Ha said she had been involved with some 11 or 12 green-focused pilot programs before Eco House Challenge received the appropriately coloured light to go ahead. “The thing is that ‘it’s a great idea for a TV show’ is not necessarily what gets on to commercial television,” she said yesterday. “There is a commercial aspect to television that has great sway.”
“It had eight pages on how to be green and the rest was buy, buy, buy, buy! “she said, laughing.” “But you have to start somewhere.”
Channel Seven’s popular breakfast program Sunrise is certified carbon-neutral, while Channel Ten has begun advertising Cool Aid: The National Carbon Test, a climate-based challenge to be shot in Sydney.
