How Cool Are Opossums

opossums 01 How Cool Are Opossums

I have seen these crazy looking rat guys here in Venice for years. Walking up and down the streets in the middle of the night, balancing on tops of fences and magically disappearing before the sun rises. I have always been too scared of their looks to ever get close to one. So, when I saw the Quest Show Feature on Opossums, I knew I had to post it on G Living. They turn out to be cool guys to have around the garden and they are not that scary.

Did you know that opossums are good to have in your backyard? Learn why and a bunch of other cool critter facts when we visit the wildlife ambassadors that live at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek, CA.

Michelle Kaufmann’s Green It Yourself Vertical Wall Planting

We are really into gardening and designing. So, when we saw Architect Michelle Kaufmanns little web shows about vertical wall gardens, we had to post it. Michelle shows us how to add green to a tiny or even nonexistent garden with a wall mounted garden. A vertical garden can work in doors or on any exterior wall.

This is a Green It Yourself Project. For the project you will need a vertical plastic planting tray, soil and some plants.

Exclusive Interview With Sandy Skinner Founder of ecoSkin

ecoskin 03 Exclusive Interview With Sandy Skinner Founder of ecoSkin

This week in our series of exclusive interviews with some of the top emerging Green Designers we are featuring Sandy Skinner from the company ecoSkin. Sandy founded the company in 2007 after a 17 year career in the fashion industry, where she had worked in virtually every position. From buying, to managing operation and even serving as President for a major contemporary brand. When starting ecoSkin, she wanted to create a new brand which would focus on environmentally sustainable luxury fabrics, which are woven and sewn within the United States. She insists her dye houses and manufacturing facilities—all in the Los Angeles area—follow her demanding quality, environmental and labor standards. And, she personally oversees every high-quality and eco-friendly detail, from the selection of raw material to the oversight of meticulous local dying, weaving and sewing to the design of green hangtags and labels.

q question interview Exclusive Interview With Sandy Skinner Founder of ecoSkin G Monkie: Before becoming a designer, what was your background and when did you get started?

a answer interview Exclusive Interview With Sandy Skinner Founder of ecoSkin Sandy: My experience is more on the merchandising end.  I have been doing private label merchandising and line development for over 12 years now.  My bio is also on the website and I know you can pull some details from there.

q question interview Exclusive Interview With Sandy Skinner Founder of ecoSkin G Monkie: Which designers or companies in the green fashion space have inspired you and have they influenced your business model?

a answer interview Exclusive Interview With Sandy Skinner Founder of ecoSkin Sandy: There is nobody I really model the company after.  I feel like we are trying to do something different.  We want to go after a fashion forward customer who is looking for a green choice in her wardrobe.  I always say she buys the line because she loves it but the benefit is that it is green not the only reason she is buying.

Over Priced Under Powered ELMOTO HR-2 Electric Scooter

elmoto hr2 02 Over Priced Under Powered ELMOTO HR 2 Electric Scooter

Before we get into the details, I would like to just say I think the ELMOTO H2 looks pretty cool. It has the fat tires, front and rear shocks all geared toward giving you a smooth safe ride. But the short distance between the seat and handle bars, seems like it wouldn’t put you in a comfortable position. But that is a minor issue. My real concern is the price vs power the bike delivers. Electric bikes which have pedals, don’t require the rider to have a license, but the governments tops their speed at 20 miles per hour. You can use the pedals to get over that cap. But bikes with no pedals, like this ELMOTO, does require a motorcycle license and can go at any speed it wants. So, when I saw the top speed was 30 miles an hour and the bike cost around $5k, I just didn’t see that value.

If you are going to make it a scooter or motorcycle, it needs to go much faster to make it worth the hassle and cost of getting a license and insurance.

I think I will stick with my A2B Ultra Motor Electric bike which cost only $2700 and goes 20 miles an hours. Plus no license or insurance required.

Maurer House British Columbia

maurer residence 01 Maurer House British Columbia

The Maurer Residence by Allen+Maurer Architects. No tree was cut, no rock was blasted, no contours remodelled. 4 small buildings surrounded by existing trees form a private, tranquill garden. The simple shed roofs flow with the land toward a splendid view of Okanagan Lake.

“Form-Follows-Physics” guided the design: simple roofs, no roof intersections, large overhangs, good ventilation, finishes that are durable and appropriate to the climate: tile flooring, metal cladding and -roofing, state-of-the-art Low-E glazing.

Placement of buildings, roof overhangs, existing mature trees, performance of glazing product, thermal mass of concrete slab and tile flooring, all reduce heat gain in summer and made air conditioning unnecessary.

High Speed Trains Between Los Angeles and San Francisco

QUEST on KQED Public Media.

Imagine traveling from San Francisco to Los Angeles in about two-and-a-half hours, without getting on a plane. Soon, you wont have to imagine. With California voters and President Obama both pushing the project forward, we may soon see the work actually starting on the new tracks and other infrastructure.

Here is what Obama said in May 2009. “My high-speed rail proposal will lead to innovations that change the way we travel in America. We must start developing clean, energy-efficient transportation that will define our regions for centuries to come,” said President Obama. “A major new high-speed rail line will generate many thousands of construction jobs over several years, as well as permanent jobs for rail employees and increased economic activity in the destinations these trains serve. High-speed rail is long-overdue, and this plan lets American travelers know that they are not doomed to a future of long lines at the airports or jammed cars on the highways.”

In this QUEST Web exclusive, we update a story we did last year on a plan to bring high-speed rail to California as voters head to the ballot boxes to decide the fate of Proposition 1A. Hop aboard to learn about the science behind high-speed rail travel and the obstacles that lie in its path.

Quest and Dr. Kendrick Taylor Shows Us The Science Behind Global Warming

antarctica 01 Quest and Dr. Kendrick Taylor Shows Us The Science Behind Global Warming

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of videos and post saying global warming is a hoax. The think behind this idea is based on solar activity on the Sun. When the Sun has more sun spot, the Earth and other planets warm up. When the Sun has fewer sun spots, the planets cool down. A natural cycle, which explains everything right? Well, if you believe in science, you will learn Global Warming we are experiencing isn’t that simple.

KQED Television and their show Quest, tags along with Dr. Kendrick Taylor, as he goes about showing how Science knows Global Warming isn’t about Sun Spots, but about human activity.

How do we know that the climate is changing? In this video, provided by Scientist Kendrick Taylor learn how 8-foot long ice core samples extracted from deep in the ice layer of Antarctica hold key evidence of rapidly changing climactic conditions.
