George Clooney Urges U.N. Action in Darfur

Part 1

(Looking back at 2006 when George Clooney and his father, traveled to Sudan to see for themselves what was happening)

George Clooney has been speaking out in Washington to urge aid for the Darfur Crisis. George along with his dad Nick Clooney smuggled cameras into the Darfur refugee camps in April 2006 for five days to report on the genocide first hand. Over 200,000 have been killed and over 2 million have fled their homes since 2003.

Yesterday, George Clooney addressed the U.N. Security Council to urge them to send peacemakers to Sudan’s Darfur Region to prevent genocide. Clooney warned them if they did not, millions will die in what he called the first genocide of the 21st century.

Clooney told the council members, “It’s not getting better. It’s getting much, much worse.

And it is only the international community that can help us. Now, I know there are members of you here that, for what I’m sure are sensible reasons, have failed to use leverage at times to keep the — to get the peacekeepers on the ground. Well, we now have a date. The date is September 30. The 1st of October will leave these people with nothing. Whatever the reason, it’s not good enough. On October 1, it won’t just be the Janjaweed murdering and raping with impunity or Minnawi’s SLA slaughtering the Fur tribes.

In Season | 7 Delicious Ways to Enjoy Pomegranates

pomegranateseed In Season | 7 Delicious Ways to Enjoy Pomegranates

Pomegranate season has begun. I’m seeing them everywhere at the farmer’s markets. Pomegranates are usually in season from October through January. Native to Persia and cultivated in the Mediterranean for thousands of years, pomegranates are becoming the newest trendy fruit in the US — grown mostly in Southern California to be sold as pomegranate juice to health conscious consumers. Pomegranate juice isn’t the only way to incorporate the high anti-oxidants and other health benefits of the fruit into your diet. While they are in season as fresh whole fruits, try some of these delicious recipes that include the tangy sweet and sour pomegranate to zest up your meal. You can also juice them fresh, or be creative and add them as a garnish to salads, drinks, deserts, dips and guacamole’s etc. Continue Reading / Additional Photos / Videos

Pomegranate Infused Vodka Spritzer

pomegranatespritzer Pomegranate Infused Vodka Spritzer

Pomegranates are the hotest new superfruit for cocktails. It used to be all about the cranberry — now pomegranate is the ‘It’ fruit showing up in everything from Pomegranate Martinis (Pometinis) to Pomegranate Champagne. Touted for their myriad of health benefits and high anti-oxidant levels, they also taste great in mixed drinks due to their sweet and tangy flavor. This drink is only lightly flavored with a hint of pomegranate and tangy lemon and sweetened with healthy low glycemic agave instead of a sugar syrup. Low on calories and sugar and high in anti-oxidants and infused natural vitamins, this drink is not only beautiful and festive but could save your waistline as well this holiday season. The deep red color of the pomegranate pops against the the clear liquid. You can also add a splash of pomegranate juice if you want a stronger pomegranate flavor and color. Grapefruit & Mint Spritzer

grapespritzer Grapefruit & Mint Spritzer

Grapefruit and Mint Spritzer (raw)

Usually made with white wine , this grapefruit juice spritzer is a refreshing alternative for an early morning wake up call. Who wants to get buzzed first thing when they wake up anyways? Well, I’m sure you know someone–if you’re reading this any time before 10am though, it’s probably not you. I’ll bet it’s even great for hangovers, or even sipped in between cocktail glasses to prevent you from getting properly sloshed in the first place.

I love the accent of the fresh mint against the bubbly tang of the sour grapefruit and lime juice. I also prefer to use a natural sparkling mineral water, but you can use any sparkling water.

Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus

Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus

The abundance of organic peppers in season locally around here makes me want to start adding them to everything. In turn they help cool you down in the heat, which is why the hotter the climate, the hotter the food, usually. One of my favorites that I grab handfuls of at the farmer’s market is jalapenos. They have such a nice sharp green pepper flavor with just a hint of spice that seems to disappear seconds later. When you first take a bite of this hummus you think it’s going to get really hot, then it just sort of disappears. The ample amounts of lime and salt help soften the bite, and the fresh fragrant cilantro blends beautifully to mellow it out.

Pink Cherry Raspberry Shake

shake 01 Pink Cherry Raspberry Shake

Cherry-Raspberry Shake (raw)

Giving a recipe for a shake is kind of odd for me, because I usually just throw in whatever frozen fruit I have with whatever creamy base I have and add a squirt of agave and a dash of vanilla etc. My shakes don’t vary that much. I would like to try new flavors and combinations though. This one has cherries, raspberries and banana in cashew milk.

Raspberry Acai Shake:

1 1/2 Cup Cashew Milk (or 1 whole young coconut)

1 Cup Frozen Raspberries

1 Cup Frozen Cherries

1 Banana (Frozen or Fresh)

2-3 TB Agave (to taste)

1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract

Squeeze of Lime Juice

Pinch of Sea Salt

Green Tea | Flavor it with Lemon or Orange

green tea 003 Green Tea | Flavor it with Lemon or Orange

Green Tea has been hailed as the holy grail superfood –- getting credit for everything from making you slim, gorgeous, smart, relaxed and cancer free. So, what’s the bad news? Well, aside from concerns over the fluoride and caffeine in teas, what good are all the antioxidants if they’re never even absorbed?

Recent studies have shown that most of the free-radical fighting catechins in green tea — the ones credited for most of these wondrous effects — never even make it to your bloodstream. In fact, only 20% of the antioxidant catechins survive after digestion because they’re unstable in non-acidic environments.

Tapenade is a rich olive spread popular in the Mediterranean. It’s quite easy to make at home. Measure out 1 cup of olives first. Then, pit them. Olives are easy to pit if you just push down onto a cutting board from above with your fingers. Plus the olive oil is great for your skin!

Homemade Black Olive Tapenade:

1 clove garlic

1 cup black olives, pit

1/2 lemon’s juice, about 1 Tablespoon

2 Tablespoons olive oil

1 Tablespoon thyme

2 teaspoons rosemary
