What do you do, if you are itching to grow things, but live in a walk up apartment in Brooklyn? You convert a old pickup into a mobile Truck Farm. A funny way to indulge your green thumb. Wicked Delicate Productions, created a very special film about their journey to create their very own Truck Farm.
The ordinary looking truck — ordinary aside from the bed filled with soil (using green roof technology) and heirloom veggies — parked on Van Brunt Street had been turning heads in the neighborhood for a while but no one knew quite what to make of it. Two months later, Cheney’s mobile garden/CSA-on-wheels/four-wheeled farm is literally all over the place.

I thought maybe you needed a music break, so I dug up a little Depeche Mode. I have always been into their music, since the very beginning. But it wasn’t until the live concert album 101, that I officially became a Mode Monkie. That album seem to speak volumes about my own life. Every song seem to touch on a subject which I myself was struggling with. I was in my mid teens and still figuring out what the hell this world was all about. Who is this god everyone seems to blindly believe in and if he is so good, why is our world so screwed up? This is the same question the song Blasphemous Rumours had the courage to ask about.
It’s amazing after all these years, they are still cranking out powerful music. Their latest release is called Sounds of the Universe. They decided to sell the album before they even finished it on Apples iTunes. If you purchased it in advance, you actually got two albums, with songs, remixes and videos. The cool part was, as they finished something you instantly got it. You didn’t have to wait until some official release date when everything was done. After the official release date, all the extra’s disappeared. If you waited to long, you lost out. I guess that was their way of rewarding the devoted fans. People who trust them and actually paid in advance. I am glad I was one of the devoted. I have an extra 10 songs / remixes and behind the scene videos of them making the album. Pretty cool, don’t you think?
I posted a live performance video below for the first single called Wrong. After the jump I posted several more classics. Now click play and get your mode on!
In a new article on Huffington Post Dr. James Hansen, the Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, writes about the continue failure of the United States to enact an effective climate policy. Which has had the effect of allowing other countries to follow our lead. At the latest G-8 Summit meeting of world leaders, no countries made nearer-term reduction targets and 17 developing nations participating in the G-8 summit refused to commit to any targets at all. This wouldn’t be a big deal, if policy on hand was about what color to paint buildings or the length of women’s dresses, or some other nonsense. Climate policy is about the actual survival of all living beings on the planet. I am adding a section of Dr. James Hansens post below:
Article by Dr. James Hansen via Huffington Post: It didn’t take long for the counterfeit climate bill known as Waxman-Markey to push back against President Obama’s agenda. As the president was arriving in Italy for his first Group of Eight summit, the New York Times was reporting that efforts to close ranks on global warming between the G-8 and the emerging economies had already tanked:
The world’s major industrial nations and emerging powers failed to agree Wednesday on significant cuts in heat-trapping gases by 2050, unraveling an effort to build a global consensus to fight climate change, according to people following the talks.
Looking at Daryl Hanna’s headlines as of late, you might get the impression she is just another Paris Hilton. Whoring herself out to green non-profits, looking for a few celebs willing to spend 5 minutes at green carpet events. Spewing green catch phrases such as, Hybrids are the cool way to go to save the planet and such. (Something Paris told us, as she drove off in her 90 ton suv hybrid, towing her Mercedes, wearing the latest in fox fur). Who does Daryl think she is fooling, right! Are you with me? Well if you are, you must be on some serious drugs or own a coal mine in West Virginia. Those good old Mountain Top Coal Mining bosses, in the heart of the West Virginia Coal Country want us all to believe Daryl Hanna is just another empty headed blonde celebrity, who needs to shut her mouth and stay out of their business. Lucky for us, she has a better idea. She is living her values, even if that means getting arrested in the process.
In a recent post on Huffingtonpost, Daryl Hanna writes about why she decided to fly to West Virginia just to get arrested.
Daryl Hanna: Why would I fly across the country on my own dime knowing I would most likely end up in jail in one of the poorest parts of America?
Well, have you ever heard of MTR?
Don’t feel bad, my friends are intelligent, well-read and informed people, but most of them had never heard of MTR (Mountain Top Removal) either.
So, I went to Coal River to help bring much needed attention to this hidden, criminal (but somehow legal) form of mining. I was honored to be joining an inspiringly brave group of concerned Americans, which included NASA climate scientist James Hansen who was among the first to sound the alarm on the climate crisis. The sharp, charismatic, 94 year old, former West Virginia U.S. Representative and Secretary of State Ken Hechler, who was the first congressman to introduce a Federal bill to abolish strip mining in 1971. (If passed the bill could have prevented this mess we find ourselves in.) And I was deeply moved to be arrested with those affected by MTR in Kentucky, and the many local residents fighting for their very lives, including a half dozen senior citizens, canes, walkers and all.
19 Oct 1968, London, England, UK — Beatle John Lennon holds his girlfriend, artist Yoko Ono, as they leave a London court hearing after facing charges of possessing marijuana and obstructing police. The couple was released on bail, and a trial was scheduled for November 28, 1968.
The Obama White House Drug Czar is calling for the end of the “War on Drugs”. In this new article in the Wall Street Journal, quotes Gil Kerlikowske saying “Regardless of how you try to explain to people it’s a ‘war on drugs’ or a ‘war on a product,’ people see a war as a war on them,” he said. “We’re not at war with people in this country.”
From the Wall Street Journal:The administration also said federal authorities would no longer raid medical-marijuana dispensaries in the 13 states where voters have made medical marijuana legal. Agents had previously done so under federal law, which doesn’t provide for any exceptions to its marijuana prohibition.
During the presidential campaign, President Barack Obama also talked about ending the federal ban on funding for needle-exchange programs, which are used to stem the spread of HIV among intravenous-drug users.
Back in September of 2008 Chrysler seemed to have the muscle to take over the electric car market. They called in all the press and television networks to show off not one but a whole line of electric cars. They rolled out an electric car for every possible customer, By converting their existing line of cars to electric motors and battery systems. They even tried to one up the only existing electric car company with a highway capable car, Tesla Motors, by rolling out a Lotus electric car as well.
Here is what the line up of electric vehicles was suppose to be, plug-in hybrid Jeeps and Town & Country van and Dodge Circuit EV. Now that the company is in bankruptcy, we will have to wait and see which of these electric cars pop out on the other end, if any.
Calling Cameron Diaz just a celebrity is selling her way too short. I mean, lumping her in with the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and that Spencer Pratt guy, is just wrong. Yes, she is part of the Hollywood buzzing engine, and yes, she is the highest paid actress in town, but she doesn’t act like it. She acts more like a Green Peace volunteer than a super celeb. When the magazine Marie Claire, asked Cameron to be their Cover Girl for the upcoming July issue, she turned the tables and asked them to come along with her as she filmed a documentary about what people are willing to do to save themselves, the planet and just maybe our future.
As Cameron hit the streets to talk with the average person, she quickly came to some sad conclusions, we really might just be screwed. “I want to leave you with this thought,” Diaz says to the woman. “After all you’ve told me . . . what would it take for you to do something to change your environment?” The woman, speechless, looks like she’s going to cry.
“I’m sad,” Diaz says later, in the car on the way to a Mexican joint for dinner. “It’s just sad.” She drains a plastic water bottle and tosses it on the floor of the car. “And I’m unhappy about the waste I just produced.” Diaz and Dylan, sitting next to her in the backseat, conclude that we as a people are summarily, environmentally “fucked.” In fact, that quickly becomes the leitmotif of the trip, and it cracks them up every time. Diaz, out of the blue: “You know what we are?” Dylan: “Let me guess—fucked?” More after the jump.
Okay so the book really isn’t about the G Living Monkies or even about me the Monkie Dark Overlord, but it should be. I am the darkest, greenest, juice guzzling monkie on the planet. I need a little praise too. I am just joking, I would guzzle green juice if anyone praised me or not. I am just that kind of Monkie.
The book (Thanking The Monkey) is by author Karen Dawn and is described as a book about Rethinking The Way We Treat Animals. No, it’s not a scared straight kind of book, with night video images of lab animals with their brains attached to shock devices. I think its a lighter fun type of book, in the same vain as the Skinny Bitch Books by my friend Rory Freedman. Her books are still on the NYTimes Best Seller List, how cool is that! Now to be honest, I haven’t seen the book yet, I just stumbled across a video on Youtube, which I posted below. In the video all the people I know are in the video and they even used my photo of Darrell Hanna with the rescued calves from Animal Acres.
Soon, I will go out and get a copy of the book and report back what I think of it. But until I get one, here is the official book description from the publisher and if you get a copy before me, post your thoughts below!
I am always on the look out for alternative ways to use electric motors. Big small used new, no matter, give me some electric between my legs and I am a happy monkie. Okay I stoled that line from a girl friend of mine, and she wasn’t talking about electric bikes. But she had never seen the Sparta Ion. An electric retro styled hybrid bike which would even make the coolest urban goth chick re-think their favorite electric appliance.
This hybrid electric / peddle bike with the retro details in all the right places, might just be my new favorite. Look at the back wheel with its wrap around mud guard and the clear protector over the chain. That is just screaming Portland, isn’t it. The only down side for the lazy among us, is that you have to peddle this thing. Yes, peddle an electric bike! I know, what the hell are they thinking. Don’t they know, only us lazy twig leg people are willing to fork over the big bucks to look like dorks in public. And dorks don’t want to peddle.
