Behnaz Sarafpour | The New Guard

They say old habits die hard. But when the newer habits are organic and more ethically worthwhile, sometimes the process can be sped up.

New York based designer Behnaz Sarafpour has accomplished much in a short time. A graduate of the Parsons School of Design, it wasn’t long until she found herself was working alongside some of the biggest names in the business – Richard Tyler for Anna Klein, Narciso Rodriguez and Isaac Mizrahi. In 2002, she launched her self-named label, which she describes as “the epitome of modern elegance and witty style”. It has certainly gained her a legion of fans including Hollywood leading ladies Claire Danes, Selma Blair, Rachel McAdams, Mandy Moore and Anne Hathaway.

For Spring/Summer 2008, Sarafpour turned her attention towards green – showcasing a capsule collection of sustainable clothing at NY’s Fashion Week. The result? An entirely handmade collection using only organic materials and natural dyes derived from sawdust and other oddities. Labor intensive perhaps, but to stunning effect. Among the highlights, palm printed wrap dresses, billowing white organic cotton ensembles, elegantly embellished eveningwear and eye popping coral accents.

What grabs me about Sarafpou — aside from her designs, obviously — is the fact that she, as a traditional designer, has taken the leap towards sustainable style. Sarafpour says she’ll continue to offer organic pieces in her collection as much as possible.

Which is a win-win — both for us and for the environment.
