The big brains at Lexus have evidently stumbled upon a fundamental truth of the American car market: instead of trying simply just make cars run more efficiently, it’s more lucrative to make cars run fast more efficiently.
Coming into its second year on the market, the 450h is the second of Lexus’s now three vehicles to feature the Lexus Hybrid Drive (in reality just a relabeled second-generation Toyota Synergy Drive). Along with the RX 400h sport utility and brand-new LS 600h flagship sedan, Lexus is attempting to corner the market on performance hybrids, just as Toyota has with efficiency hybrids.
Its 3.5-liter V-6 engine puts out 292 horsepower, while the electric motor-generator ups its power is equivalent to a 4.5-liter V-8. The generator produces some 197 horsepower, but because the peaks don’t match up, 292 and 197 add up to 339. Don’t ask me how.
When G Living told me I’d be cruising around with an actor named “Brad” in his electric car, I was like, “Whoa! I wonder if Angie and the kids’ll be in the back seat?”
“No,” they answered. “Not Brad Pitt. Brad Dourif.” I went to the Internet Movie Database to make sure I knew who they were talking about, and when I saw that the character actor had a amazingly diverse resume dating back to an Oscar-nominated performance in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, I was like, “Whoa! That’s even cooler than Brad Pitt!”
The ride was fun. And so was our chat, which extended far beyond movies and electric cars.

On this edition of G Living’s Room101 our special guest is the founder of Tree People, Andy Lipkis. Andy has decided planting millions of decorative trees in the city isn’t enough. No, he says, trees are great but if we don’t build the entire forest eco-system around the tree’s they will never be able to do the job we so desperately need them to do. He believes this expanded mission, is so important, that it just might save Los Angeles from it’s self.
What does that mean? Well, L.A. like most of the major cities around the world, is a dirty beast. The 13 million or so people living in and around L.A. live a chemically dirty life. During the course of a day, your average Los Angeleno will do their fair share to dirty the place up. They will dump unknown amounts of waste into the land fills, pour vast amount of pesticide and chemical fertilizers onto their un-stainable lawns and drive their cars all over town, to make sure the air over their heads gets a little too.
Here at G Living we really like mixing it up at a gas stations. Okay, I’m being a little facetious. BP Helios House is more than a gas station – it was the chosen location for the debut of Linda Loudermilk’s Spring 2008 collection, Windpower. Supermodel Kristi Hume and other long limbed lovelies pumped gas…I mean, strutted the catwalk…for a host of eco-fabulous celebrities including rumored guest Prince, although the super secretive star did manage to keep well out of the spotlight. How convenient.
When it comes to high-end green fashion, they don’t come any bigger or better than Linda Loudermilk. Linda introduced breakthrough fabrics like mud-dyed linen, vegan silk and milk cashmere. These were in addition to her staples like organic cotton, seaweed wood pulp and sasawashi (a Japanese leaf… don’t worry, I’m half Japanese and I had to look that one up).
