I thought I had water figured out. Municipal tap and all its goodies like chlorine, fluoride, pharmaceuticals, and toilet paper residue were long gone from my reality. When I would see friends and family drinking it I would cringe inside. We are giving ourselves a light dose of antibiotics when we drink chlorinated water. And fluoride? Can anyone say mind control? Google “fluoride mind control” for some very interesting reading material.

I was a bottled water drinker. I hated the idea of all the plastic, but I tried as much as possible to buy gallon bottles and to reuse them for watering my plants or other duties. I figured they were quickly recycled anyways.

Then I started to learn about xenoestrogens (estrogens found outside of nature, such as in PLASTIC), and how they were totally screwing with our endocrine systems. Feminizing men and giving cancer to women…wha? Just because plastic is EVERYWHERE, doesn’t mean that its ok to use. We are not only what we eat, but also what we drink. Drink more plastic…could it be? So what to do about all of this?

I came across Daniel Vitalis through the website We Like it Raw. He has been experimenting with optimal nutrition for 15 years, going through vegan to raw-vegan to wild foods, and now even grass fed animal products. He is about thriving, and his approach to nutrition has inspired me immensely.

What is this bikini body challenge all about? Lori said: “I am documenting my weight loss bikini body journey with a motivation to look good naked. My desire for a lean green clean machine is through raw foods and fun balancing workouts. Looking good naked may seem superficial, however our bodies are a reflection of self love and respect. Overall, that is a loss of 1.75 inches in just over a week. This is fantastic and I need to remember that my efforts are not going unnoticed even if I make a poor diet choice here and there. My good efforts far outweigh the negative ones.

At this point, most of us know what foods are healthy. The challenge is no longer in finding the best health-promoting foods, but rather conveniently incorporating them into the diet on a daily basis without overextending our time budget. What then is the best route to take when aiming to integrate more healthy foods into the diet by replacing the less-healthy options?

A common approach when transitioning to a new way of eating is to eliminate certain non-health promoting foods. However, the most effective way to seamlessly adopt a new eating plan is to include more health-promoting foods as opposed to eliminating the less healthy. This is a practical solution that works on a physiological level as well as a psychological one.

Physically, this approach is ideal in that it allows time for the body to detoxify itself. Healthier foods generally have more fiber, more chlorophyll and are often enzyme rich. These three components of healthy food will, however, take the body a bit of time to adapt to. By slowly adding foods that are rich in these nutrients, the body will grow used to them and actually begin to expect and even desire them over time.

I’m hooked on this one. I’ve been trying to incorporate hemp seeds into more dishes and to replace other nuts or seeds. Even though they are so healthy and taste pretty good, I always found it hard to know what to do with them. Besides for sprinkling them on top of my salads or mixing them with quinoa in tabouli salads. I knew there had to be better ways to get them in larger quantities into my diet. I’ve never liked the hemp protein powders. They are just too gritty and powdery, I hate the texture they give to my smoothies.

What surprised me was that the whole hemp seeds have basically the same amount of protein as the hemp protein powders. They are not actually concentrated, and the protein is not isolated anyways. They are just lower in fat. However the fat that is in hemp seeds is the kind of fat that I want and desperately need in my diet! Hemp seeds have basically the perfect profile of essential fatty acids and the best possible balance of omega 6, omega 3 and GLA. Unlike flax, which is ultra heavy in omega 3, hemp won’t throw your EFA balance off if eaten long term or in large quantities, since it is naturally balanced. It has a 4:1 Omega 6 to 3 ratio just like the diet that humans evolved on for 2.5 million years. Flax also doesn’t contain the GLA that hemp has, and hemp doesn’t contain estrogen unlike flax that is higher in phytoestrogen then soy. I could go on and on about the health benefits of hemp and how it is such a perfect complete protein and high in the sulfur amino acids, but really I just wanted to consume more of it. When building up running mileage, it’s important to do it gradually to allow tendons, ligaments and muscles to recover before stressing them with the next run.

The safest way is to not increase running mileage or time by more than 10% per week. A three week build cycle followed by one week of recovery is a sound approach.

I go by time run instead of mileage because it’s easier to calculate. Simply time each run and add up the total number of minutes spent running in a given week. For example, if you went for a 30 minute run on Monday, a 60 minute run on Wednesday, a 45 minute run on Friday and an 80 minute run on Saturday, your total for the week would be: 195 minutes. Increasing by no more than 10%, that means the following week should not exceed 214.5 minutes of running (195 x 1.1 = 214.5).

I can admit it, I am not happy with my body. Not that I am fat, odd shaped or super out of shape, it’s just not perfect and that is my own fault. So, when I saw Lori Painter’s Raw Food Diet Bikini Challenge videos, I completely understood where she was coming from. I may not be as brave as she is, to toss on a bikini (I am a guy, so that would be odd and might scare some of you) and start jumping around dancing in front of a video camera, but I still related. I want to get back into shape too and if Lori can get back into Bikini shape eating a raw vegan diet, so can I. Right… That is what your saying at home.. You can do it..

You maybe asking yourself who is Lori Painter, since she hasn’t been a regular here on G Living. Lori is an amazing woman who has decided to take her raw vegan life online in her own blog called Inspire2Act. Professionally she is a health practitioner . Each week Lori completely opens up on camera about her desires, goals, struggles, children and her quest to get back into a bikini fit body.

I did lots of internal cleansing with milk thistle, dandelion, and lemon. I worked out training 2 times a week and a 2 hour power yoga session at least once a week. I also was drinking 1 1/2 gallons of herbal tea or water a day. I did not eat until I had worked out. I earned my breakfast. I made my meals last a minimum of 20 minutes, I chewed until liquid and I ate to keep me from being hungry rather than being full. I took lots of green supplements as well as kelp for my thyroid. It’s day ten in the no-eating-animal-products house — which means I’m a third of the way through my plant-based experiment. Five days ago, I pledged not to overdo the 3 “S”s, which were: sugar, soy and seitan. Here’s an update on how that’s going.

Sugar. Wah waaaah. I have definitely been consuming more than I should. It’s not that I’ve been scoffing “G” brownies and soy ice cream all day, but I have been eating my fair share of sugar-laden granola and other breakfast cereals (topped with agave), coffee (with a generous amount of agave), fruit and nut bars, dates, bananas… that kind of thing. Okay, I know that doesn’t sound too bad, but you don’t know about my shady past as a cereal addict of Seinfeld proportions. There was a period in my life — all through college and many embarrassing years beyond — when I literally lived on Sultana Bran.
