As you might have guessed I subscribe to the Architectural Magazine Metropolis. Of course for all the right reasons, its cutting edge, they only do modern and the magazine constantly features green projects. I just received my May 2009 issue and this thing is packed with green. Maybe it’s their Earth Month issue or something. What ever the reason is, the first thing that stopped me in my tracks was the cover. Not because of the dull graphic, but because of the idea behind the graphic, which was harvesting wind power directly from the hundreds of thousands of POWER TOWERS already dotting the landscapes of the world. What a brilliant idea. Why build wind turbine towers. when you already have towers for power lines? It’s the kill two birds with one stone thing. (Of course I am a vegan, so I wouldn’t do that, but you get the idea) This was the winning concept of Metropolis’s 2009 Next Generation competition weds two common aspects of the landscape: electrical-transmission towers and wind turbines.
I am going to feature part of the article here, but to read the whole thing head over to metropolismag.com. Also, below, tell us what you think. Is this a good idea, or just crazy. Do you believe in wind power?
I just wanted to post this video about Oscar Grimm, who passed away last year. I didn’t know Oscar personally, but I did exchange a few emails with him. He is the Co-Founder of Freshtopia, a fun online show about going green and eating a raw vegan diet. The show started up about the same time we started G Living. We took different approaches but we cared deeply about the same subject. The green movement needed a voice and Oscar and his partner in life Tanja Andrews, knew they had a voice to give. Over the next few years, Tanja and Oscar tirelessly created show after show for their fast growing internet audience. They showed a new generation, going green was not only the right thing to do, it could be life changing. Which you can clearly see, going green changed both of their lives for the better.
I am very sad Oscar is no longer with us. I wish I had taken the time to get to know him beyond the internet. Tanja seems to have stopped producing shows for now. I hope she is okay and finds the strength to go on. The world needs her and Freshtopia.
To see Oscar and Tanja’s work, visit Freshtopia.net. You can watch archived shows and read Oscars final post about his very brave battle with cancer.
What is happening to Obama, why is he tossing out the change message and sticking with more of the same hide the truth policy from the Bush years? Movie Star / Filmmaker John Cusack wrote an open Blackberry messages to President Obama, asking him to keep his promise of change. John and millions of other supporters are upset with Obama’s decision to block a court decision to finally release all of the photos taken by military members of abuse happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. Here is part of his letter from Huffington Post:
John Cusack: If I had the President’s Blackberry, I would send this.
On Wednesday you reversed your administration’s promise to finally release pictures of detainee abuse.
The release of the photos was won by ACLU lawyers who have fought to bring to light the full extent of the brutality and torture that U.S. Army and intelligence services have perpetrated against human beings in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay and at CIA “black sites” around the world. Torture that was sanctioned and effectively legalized under the former administration, and that, if we are to be honest, most Americans knew — or should have known — was being carried out in our names.Continue Reading / Additional Photos / Videos
Normally G Living wouldn’t touch this story with a 10 foot carrot! But for some reason, tons of people are searching for Shanna Moakler and finding G Living. Googlers are finding our story about Shanna going Vegan after reading Skinny Bitch! So, we thought we should shine a G / Light on this G/Woman. It’s the least we can do!
Who is Shanna and why are people searching for her? Well, it turns out this former Miss USA / Playboy Centerfold was working for the Miss California Pageant as the Co-Executive Director. That is until a few hours ago. She has just quit in protest! Oh no, is what your saying right! What is the big deal, who cares? We don’t really know who cares, but here is why she quit.
She is mad at the Donald! Yes, Donald Trump, the YOUR FIRED, Mega Combover Guy Super Hero. He owns the pageant and will not de-crown Miss California, the anti-gay air head Carrie Prejean. At a news conference on Monday, Moakler accused Prejean of violating her contract with the Miss California Pageant and said she should lose the crown. Moakler thinks because Prejean broke the rules and lied about posing nude, amongst other things, she should no longer be Miss California.
Modern? Luxury? Green? Wow. Sounds like a job for G Living! And send me, please. We’re excited to be invited to the first ever Wired LivingHome. Off to Brentwood, California, taking you (wherever you are) to a residence that promises to serve as the benchmark for how we can live NOW. The future is here. NOW. We may not be fulfilling upon my vision of the future: the Jetsons with flying cars and instant pill meals (just add water)… but iPhones and electric cars come pretty close, and if you’re a total construction/architecture slut like me, these homes (if you’ve never seen one) make me want to swear. They’re cool. And this one is open to the public. We can get in, and you can, too.
BMW is getting in on the action by sponsoring the event, shuttling people and offering test drives with their CleanEnergy Campaign. And %s of the proceeds go to Global Green USA, the champions that enable people like you and me to afford a home like this. Look for them coming to visit us soon on The Real G.
A blast from the past: G/Woman in the News! First Posted in 2008
Shanna Moakler is a name that’s long been associated with good old American values. This former Miss USA has appeared in Playboy magazine, on “Dancing With The Stars” and married former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker on that illustrious institution of merry matrimony, MTV. (A union that ended up – like those of her TV predecessors Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey and Carmen Elektra & Dave Navarro — in that even more popular restitution, divorce).
And what American dream would be complete without the opportunity to (allegedly) batter and be battered by that icon of American womanhood, Paris Hilton, at a Los Angeles nightclub?
But now the “Mother of all Beauty Pagents” has decided to do something rather un-Amercian… she’s switched to a vegetarian lifestyle. Moakler was recently quoted on Ecorazzi as saying “My husband is a veggie and I always wanted to try it. Our first step was making our entire family go ‘organic’. I only wish we had done it sooner! I also read a book called Skinny Bitch (by our friend Rory Freedman), which opened my eyes to cruelty to animals, and that was it! It hasn’t been that hard for me… Los Angeles offers lots of great alternatives!”
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch stretches from the coast of California to Japan, and it’s estimated to be twice the size of Texas. “This is the most shocking thing I have seen,” Oprah says. Where did this trash come from? Marine biologists estimate that about 80 percent of the litter is from land, either dumped directly into waterways or blown into rivers and streams from states as far away as Iowa.
Like his grandfather, undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, Fabien Cousteau has devoted his life to exploring and protecting the world’s oceans and sea life.
Many of those affected by the enormous garbage swirl—like sea birds, turtles and beluga whales—can’t speak for themselves. “They get caught in these nets, or they swallow some of these bottle caps,” Fabien says. “Killer whales, which are kind of our mirror, our canary in the coal mine, so to speak, are ingesting all sorts of things that are affecting their health.”
NAU reached out to its customers today in an effort to have an open honest conversation about the true cost of the clothing on our backs. We thought this would be great opportunity for NAU to speak directly to all consumers, not just their current customers. And yes, many staff members here at G Living are current customers. I myself own more than 30 NAU Clothing items and you will see me in a NAU shirt most days of the week. So, I guess you can say I am more than a little curious to hear what they have to say. I understand the issue of cost and find myself weighing cost vs usage. How many times will I really wear something and what does that cost workout to be. Most of the time it works out to be pennies, so it makes it worth the up front investment.
Tell us what you think about pricing of green clothing. If you have an opinion, please say something in the comments.
The following is from nau.com about us section: The post is titled, Our case for a new value equation.
In any economic climate, and particularly in one as difficult as this, it’s natural to consider the price of the products we buy, and whether their value justifies their cost. In recent months, we’ve received a number of comments on The Thought Kitchen regarding the prices for Nau products. One poster commented that “the clothing is great and unique but the pricing is outrageous,” while another wrote “You have to own the grid to afford those prices.” At Nau, we’re big believers in making considered choices, so we understand our customers’ desire to understand what value our prices reflect. So here’s a look at the true cost of producing Nau clothing.
South Africa looks at their growing population of Elephants as giant rats who need to be controlled. This giant rat population has now been official marked for death and the shooting season is open for all the big game hunters out there. The good old times are back, right? How crazy is this? Can South Africa really be sliding back down the wrong side of history? They seem to be very short sighted when it comes to cleaning up their country and improving the lives of their human and animal populations.
Elephants live in very complex family groups. Killing family members at random is not only cruel, but destroys the natural learning and maturing process for the surviving members. When the oldest largest members are killed, they die with vast amount of knowledge, the younger generation needs, to survive. It’s even been shown in studies, younger elephants seem to go a little crazy from the anxiety of not being guided by senior members of the family.
Looks like David Letterman is so mad at GM and the other big automakers, he has decided to support Tesla. He goes on and on about how he loves the first Tesla car and even rolls out the new prototype sedan, The Model S. Tesla’s Chairman, Elon Musk gives credit to the documentary Who Killed The Electric Car, for bringing a spotlight to the demand for electric cars. Musk said ” When was the last time anyone cared about the death of a GM vehicle?” He was talking about GM killing off the EV1 electric car, to make way for the Hummer Beast Line of vehicles. Which have now been killed off as well.
Elon, couldn’t have paid David enough for this type of endorsement. I am sure being on shows like Late Night and The Tonight Show, puts Tesla on the map in Washington D.C. Giving them a chance at some Government funds to make the Model S into a reality. From the news hitting the web over the last few weeks, the Model S is smoke and mirrors for now. They have a long way to go and their really is no way to price the car yet. The flat screen display on the dashboard would cost $7 on its own.
The Star of the hit show Bones on the Fox Network gets straight to the Green Point. Driving a hybrid and recycling are great, but they are a drop in the bucket compared to just stop eating meat. The impact of raising and killing billions of animals every year for the standard meat based diet is massive. Basically you could be a complete ass in every other aspect of your life, as long as changed to a vegan diet and you could consider your self a super green god. Pretty cool, right!
Here is Emily on her show Bones.

As lead Monkie here at G Living, I have decided it’s time to take the company in a new direction. It’s time to take a fresh new look at what we have created and where we’re going. We started G Living way back in 2004 with the idea of being the media company for the emerging modern green lifestyle. We wanted to cover it all. The news, recipes, raw food movement, fashion, vehicles, celebrities and a zillion other things. Providing a cool platform for the not so cool idea (back then) of living green. In fact, back in 2004, the average person I would share the idea of green living with, would not only not get what I was talking about, but they saw little value in it. Things have really changed, haven’t they.
We started building version one of a site we called GreenZones, which eventually evolved into the G Living site you see now. There was little to no coverage happening in the mainstream publications or within the blog space. Zoom forward 4 years and not only is everyone covering something about living green, but most of them are all covering exactly the same things. Everything is just a poor carbon copy of each other. No first hand experiences, or knowledge, just a bunch of people surfing the web and reposting what they found. Continue Reading / Additional Photos / Videos
