Golubka (“dove” from Russian) is a mother-daughter collaboration telling a story about a life revolving around fresh and delicious food. We started a blog to share our love for mindful cooking and eating, photography, and storytelling. The kitchen is the heart of our household, where all our days begin and end, with much laughing and experimenting.
A., the mom and mastermind behind many recipes on Golubka, found her way to raw foods through postpartum health problems that occurred after the birth of second daughter Paloma, now a two year old green smoothie fiend. After regaining her health, A. became fascinated with the idea of taking raw food preparation to an artistic level. With the help of M., the older daughter, Golubka was created.
We enjoy traveling and experiencing different cuisines. Our fondness for adventurous flavours is often reflected in our own cooking, with fearless combination of fresh ingredients.
Our day jobs have nothing to do with food preparation or styling, but we’d very much like that to change, and Golubka is a first step towards our dream.

What is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the word dirty? Sexy Hot? Madonna? Maybe you visualize old rich men with half naked 20 something girls. What ever popped into your dirty little mind, I bet it wasn’t soap. When the guys at Method (the modern green soap company) think about dirty, they think of nothing but soap and how to make it cleaner, greener and look sexier. Yes sexier, so some of your dirty thoughts where on the right track.
It is this type of clean sexy thinking, that enabled the Method Guys (Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry) to build the 7th fastest growing company in the United States, and the fastest growing company in California. The fastest growing company in California, the home of Apple Computer, and a valley full of tech geeks popping out the latest electronic gadgets that will power our homes and do all the thinking for us, beat out by a couple of guys making soap in their bathtub? Come on, really?! Well according to Adam, that is exactly correct and they fully intend to keep growing their business at record speed, while continuing the path to make their company and their products even greener.
Your standard floor cleaners, soaps, dusters, furniture polishes, glass cleaners and bleaches are packed full of chemicals that do more harm then good.
Why is running a green soap company a big deal?
Well, if you look at their competition, you quickly realize these guys are not only making a green company, they are revolutionizing how the standard cleaning products are made. Leaving behind the heavy chemical based products and the mindset that produced those products in the first place, and in the process, they are turning the entire industry on it’s head.
It’s true, I’m sassy. I definitely have never been one to keep my opinions to myself. But, something happened when I found my passion in food. I found that cooking soothes me like nothing else ever has. When I get in the kitchen, my mind quiets and I create. That is a very difficult thing to do for an anxious person like me, but food has literally changed my soul.
I didn’t always have the greatest relationship with food. I spent years with chronic stomach pain, where everything I ate made me ill. Not until I found my many food intolerances, was I re-invigorated by what I COULD eat, and how it could make me feel amazing. I fell in love with food all over again, and developed an entire different mindset. With any chronic illness, you become incredibly grateful for how nurturing and delicious food can be. Food seriously healed me, emotionally and physically.
With a real name like Callalily, most people assume I was born in a tree house and raised on tofu. Wrong. Instead, it was more like “bling bling, every time I come around yo city, bling bling, pink ring worth about fifty…” Yeah, you get the point. Saving the earth, not a priority.
That is, until I grew up and started thinking for myself.
My journey began with my health. Like quite a few health enthusiast, I was always battling something; hypothyroidism, anxiety, disordered eating, IBS, etc… Fed up with annoying doctors and expensive prescriptions, I decided to take a more holistic approach and alter my diet. Overtime, I slowly learned I was able to manage these things through food alone – and that, fascinated me. Screw self-medication, food was the answer to feeling great.
Hello G World. I know you are wondering, just who the “kale” is this new GreenChef, right? Well if your not, you should be. Really you should be, and here is why, because I am not just your average, GreenChef, oh no, I am your average Nutritionist, Foodie, Yoga loving, Canadian GreenChef. See, completely different. But of course, the why’s dont stop there, no not even close. I will start by telling you, I am honestly living my passion. Yes my passion, called food. I am surrounded by this most precious element of life and I love it.
I grew up with a keen interest for anything that was related to “healthy” food. Whatever that meant – some of this included low fat yogurt, boxed granola and snack-well cookies but hey, at least I was trying!
This was the start of my path. I then ventured into the world of fitness and nutrition and very quickly became fascinated with the impact that food had on the body. I loved how what you ate affected everything you did, how you felt and how you looked. I wanted to help people make choices around food that would contribute to how they looked and felt everyday. So I went to school and became a certified nutritionist and started to do exactly that – and this made me very happy at the time – but it wasn’t enough.
Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved food, particularly the sweet stuff. I come by it honestly, since my mom’s favorite food is chocolate. I grew up on a pretty “Standard American Diet”. You know, cereal with milk for breakfast, peanut butter (fortunately the natural kind) & jelly sandwiches for lunch, and chicken/veggies/potato for dinner. My favorite treat was ice cream and my mom’s freshly baked chocolate chip cookies!
When I was 14, my mom gave me the book Fit For Life to read, after incorporating some of the principles into her life. I’m not sure what prompted her to give me the book, but I devoured it – and became a vegetarian over night! Not only that, I gave up most dairy products too. Imagine a teenager eliminating 70% of the foods they’ve grown up on?! While everyone else at high school was eating burgers, chocolate bars, soda pop, and ice cream, I was eating my perfectly combined meals most of the time (although I was a candy-aholic on weekends). Fresh fruit for breakfast, fruit/veggies/or homemade soup for lunch, and veggies with either rice, squash, or pasta, for dinner. For a while I just ate fruit – I thought, “why eat anything else when you can eat healthy sweet stuff all the time?” (NOT a great idea as I learned later on). Remember that Sesame Street song “One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong…” Ummmm yeah, I felt like an outcast.
It’s pretty rare here on the west coast to see an out spoken style driven “G” guy. I would say most of the guys on the west coast who lean green, tend to take their style cues from actor Charlton Heston, in the Planet of The Ape movies and not so much so from Brad Pitt. I don’t know what it is about living in L.A. compared to New York City, but style just doesn’t seem to be important. This is why when I came across Joshua Katcher and his site The Discerning Brute, I secretly thought to myself, there maybe hope yet for the vegan / G man. Come on, how in the world, are we ever going to have a “G” James Bond, if we don’t have any out spoken men pointing the way to green fashion alternatives.
The women in the green movement have it made, relatively that is, compared to us guys, the start-up green fashion brands, such as Stewart+Brown, exclusively focus on women. Now I completely understand why, (green guys are cheap) but it just makes the transition from toxic to organic incredibly hard for potential newbie green guys. For example, try buying a suit or some dress shoes which don’t include leather, wool or some other non vegan, organic, cruelty free materials and actually looks good. You will find out quickly you have about 2 options and non of them are in a store near you. Your only real option is to basically gamble by going online and buying from the three or four site that actually exist. But to make it even harder and more expensive, it turns out most of the cooler stuff you might find comes from England, which means higher prices and major shipping issues. Or your second option is to give up and buy some organic T-Shirts and jeans.
This is where Joshua steps in. On his blog Discerning Brute, he does the hard part for us guys. He finds what is cool out there, who are the hot new designers and even breaks down how green this stuff really is. On top of that, he sits down with designers, fashion leaders and even does the occasional street interview in an effort to bring home a little fashion reality to his fellow New Yorkers. I love to cook. Am obsessed with food. I really am. I admit it. Always have been. Enthusiastically tried every healthy diet there is, fervently read cookbooks, food magazines, researching recipes online, love watching cooking shows, could spend all day in a supermarket, only purchase organic produce, religiously shop at the local farmers market, only like to support restaurants/chefs that use seasonal, local, organic food and will travel to an obscure gourmet food shop to purchase one ingredient. Some would say I’m a bit of a food snob. Well, I am. An organic food snob.
Choosing what to make is the hardest thing. Makes me crazy. My OCD perfectionism comes out in full swing. But once I do, in the kitchen I am in heaven. At peace. Happy. Creative. Expressive. I love it. I only cook healthy stuff. I forgot to mention that. Been into the healthy side of food for the past 10 years. Before that I was a whisky drinking, pill popping, baguette and Brie eating depressed young girl writing poetry and living in a warped dreamland of Hollywood thinking I was Dorothy Parker. You get the picture. It all came crashing down when I found out I was hypoglycemic. Oh yes and I had Candida. SO I did like any obsessive foodie does, I became fascinated with what I could and could not eat and got healthy. Through experimenting with different foods I began to make the connection between what I was eating and how it directly affected how I was feeling. I became a crazy food detective. The food and mood connection rocked my world. Yes I got a wee bit neurotic but you kinda have to in order to figure out what foods work with your body and what foods don’t. Through the process of elimination I slowly started to rebuild my body. My gut. My digestion. Myself. I started cookin’ my way into health! And if I was eating with some one and they got tired or their nose immediately became stuffed or they broke out in hives I knew it had to be from what they just put in their mouth. The world of green fashion designers is still a pretty small one. It’s almost shockingly small, after 30 years of pushing this green fashion rock up this hill. What went wrong? By now I would have thought there would be millions of little Paris Hiltons demanding closets full of organic fairtrade clothing. But, that fantasy world just hasn’t materialized yet. No, the world is still full of twiggy women with a lust for the old faithfuls. Dead this, dead that and oh yes, lots and lots of chemically grown cotton please.
If we have any chance of turning the beastly giant fashion vessel around, it truly lies in the hands of the designers we are featuring here on G Living. These brave designers, with big hearts, wild imaginations and un-ending courage. Designs such as Meiling Chen, who is our feature designer of the week.
Meiling Chen, calls herself the Fearless Dreamer. And one look at her fashion collection, you can understand why. Meiling caught the fashion bug from watching her father transform traditional suits and shirts into the latest contemporary styles. This re-imagining what already existed, must have had some impact on her own green fashion ideas. Her fashion creativity has gotten her noticed by some of the big names of mainstream fashion, such as Italian Vogue, Bazaar, and others.
We caught up with Meiling via email and she was nice enough to answer a few of our questions.
Julia: How did you choose to become a designer and how did you start your career? Why G/Fashion?
Meiling: I love to draw since I was little and had my heart set in the creative field since then. My schooling has always been in the fine arts, sculpture, visual communication design (graphic design) and fashion design. I walk into the path naturally. Also, my father used to be a tailor, I was growing up immersed in the surrounding. I live in a green lifestyle and I love nature.

My name is Inaia and I consider myself a raw vegan, jet-setting, fashion-loving, jazz singer & house music DJ. My first full-fledged dive into raw food was while I was in Tokyo doing a 6-month singing contract at a 5-star hotel. I’d been vegetarian or vegan for the previous 20 years. I had experimented with raw food in varying percentages while living in Miami Beach and Paris for a couple years and had been reading about the diet, listening to podcasts, visiting websites, reading books and doing my research on it.
I had finally gotten to the point where the only thing left to do was dive in and see what effect a completely raw vegan diet would actually have on me, my health, my singing and my appearance. So I dove in.
Everyone should know by now I live in London, but I am not really English. I am what you would call a mutt, if I was a dog. I have a little bit of blood from almost every type of culture on the planet. A pinch of French, a dash of English, a smig of Spanish, and a whole lot of other strains I couldn’t even identify, but I know they are in there. All this blood mixture has made me a bit more dark, than your average English girl. You see, the girls around me tend to be more the English purebreds dull types. You know them when you see them on the street, they all have that chocky, blump, and grim face look. For a long time I thought that was just what my fellow mates looked like, but I was wrong. It’s all the dairy, beer and fried fish they suck down. As soon as I started hanging with the G Living crowd, everyone started looking a bit more human or should I say Monkie.
My point is, and I have one, is that G Women just seem to look better and when you look better, you feel better. And when you feel good, you also, feel a whole lot sexier. Which leads me to my point. G Women may feel sexy, but when it comes to vegan / organic options in the Lingerie department, we are completely left out in the cold. We don’t want chemical laden fabrics, we want soft organic sexy fabrics and designs.
Lucky for all of us, dark brooding, 1950 loving “G” club hopping girls, Jennifer Ambrose has created Enamore Limited a vintage Lingerie / Fashion House.
Julia: Why did you start with a eco / green lingerie line? Did you have experience designing lingerie?
Jennifer:Enamore started as a clothing label in 2004 and in 2006 I decided I wanted to create lingerie with the same principle as my clothing range. I didn’t have the skill to make lingerie myself so I approached designer Ayten Gasson to collaborate. The first collections were a mix of hemp/silk and vintage prints, which were a big hit with my customers. In the beginning we were fulfilling all the order from Ayten’s studio so each piece was hand made. Further down the line we parted company to focus on our own ideas. I took over the design work and started to work with a production unit in South Wales.
This weeks Exclusive G/Fashion interview is with New York based Fashion Designer Mika Machida. Mika started her company after being influenced by Johanna Hofring, the owner of Ekovaruhuset / House of Organic. Everyone should remember, we interviewed Johanna back in January. I can see why Mika would be inspired by such a dedicated and amazing woman.
But Mika is obviously inspired by more than just other G Living fashion designers. One look at Mika’s line and you can’t help but notice something different is going on here. Mika literally wants you to wear your love of nature on your sleeve, chest, and back.
Julia: Mika, your dress have to be a major conversation starters for the women wearing them. I have to ask you about all the embedded animals in your design, what inspired this design path?
Mika: I think being a designer right now is an extension of what I have been doing since my childhood. I Always loved drawing, making things, flipping through animal books…and I still do the same things! As for green fashion, after I realized that there’s the other side of urban human life, the whole human impact on nature and on ourselves. With the knowledge of unfair labor practices in poorer countries, there was no other choice left for me than going green with a responsible production process. It’s still hard to be 100% ethical and have no impact on the environment, but I am trying as much as I can and hope this will someday make a difference.
