Skinny Bitch Says, Don’t Believe the Hype

rory freedman 09 Skinny Bitch Says, Don’t Believe the Hype

I get a lot of emails from readers asking various diet and health questions. Some are from people who are already in “the know” and are familiar with healthier ways of eating. Others are from people who eat shit full-time and are inspired to overhaul their diets. Surprisingly, though, it’s the former group of people who seem to be the most confused when it comes to milk.

We can all agree that pasteurized milk sucks and has no place in our diet. (If this is news to you, park your ass in a bookstore and read chapter five of Skinny Bitch.) But for some people, the waters get muddy on the issue of raw milk. Yes, pasteurization destroys beneficial vitamins and enzymes, makes milk harder to digest, and even creates free radicals. Raw milk is clearly a better choice. And if you’re a baby cow, you should insist on drinking your milk raw. But if you’re a human and you’re old enough to read this, you shouldn’t be drinking milk, period.

Mother Nature knew what she was doing. She created all mammals with the ability to nurse their young. And that’s what all mammals do. And when their offspring reaches a certain age, they’re weaned off milk and they eat solid food. Not one goes back for milk after that last serving! Not one. You certainly don’t go kicking down your mom’s door for breast milk, do you? So why in the hell would you think you need the milk of a cow or goat any other animal now, as an adult? Why would you think it’s good for you?

Donna Karan’s Green Drink

donnakaren martha stewart katemoss 01 Donna Karans Green Drink

Way back in 2007 Donna Karan appeared on The Martha Stewart Show to talk about how her husband (who had recently passed away from cancer) had inspired her to change her life and to help others. She decided to try and help people make better / healthier choices, which would hopefully lead to them living fuller lives. Part of this mission, includes focusing on eating for your health. To bring this point home, she treated Martha to one of her favorite morning juice recipes. An Apple based green drink packed with flavor and nutrition. I have included the recipe after the jump.

As we wrote about before, Donna changed her life and diet around and lost a considerable amount of weight in the process. She consumes a diet of healthy organic living foods. She was on the show with Dr. David Hill who also made a healthy and fresh fruit smoothie that Martha said tasted like the best ice cream ever. You can catch the episode online at Martha’s site. Here is Donna Karan’s recipe for her green juice:

Hope you enjoy this flash back and get inspired to start your own juicing habit.

Exclusive Interview With Joshua Katcher, The Discerning Brute

joshua katcher 01 Exclusive Interview With Joshua Katcher, The Discerning Brute Photographer: Maro

It’s pretty rare here on the west coast to see an out spoken style driven “G” guy. I would say most of the guys on the west coast who lean green, tend to take their style cues from actor Charlton Heston, in the Planet of The Ape movies and not so much so from Brad Pitt. I don’t know what it is about living in L.A. compared to New York City, but style just doesn’t seem to be important. This is why when I came across Joshua Katcher and his site The Discerning Brute, I secretly thought to myself, there maybe hope yet for the vegan / G man. Come on, how in the world, are we ever going to have a “G” James Bond, if we don’t have any out spoken men pointing the way to green fashion alternatives.

westcoast green mens fashion planetoftheapres Exclusive Interview With Joshua Katcher, The Discerning Brute

The women in the green movement have it made, relatively that is, compared to us guys, the start-up green fashion brands, such as Stewart+Brown, exclusively focus on women. Now I completely understand why, (green guys are cheap) but it just makes the transition from toxic to organic incredibly hard for potential newbie green guys. For example, try buying a suit or some dress shoes which don’t include leather, wool or some other non vegan, organic, cruelty free materials and actually looks good. You will find out quickly you have about 2 options and non of them are in a store near you. Your only real option is to basically gamble by going online and buying from the three or four site that actually exist. But to make it even harder and more expensive, it turns out most of the cooler stuff you might find comes from England, which means higher prices and major shipping issues. Or your second option is to give up and buy some organic T-Shirts and jeans.

This is where Joshua steps in. On his blog Discerning Brute, he does the hard part for us guys. He finds what is cool out there, who are the hot new designers and even breaks down how green this stuff really is. On top of that, he sits down with designers, fashion leaders and even does the occasional street interview in an effort to bring home a little fashion reality to his fellow New Yorkers. Introducing “Obsessed Organic Foodie” GreenChef Aria Alpert

aria alpert foodie actress Introducing Obsessed Organic Foodie GreenChef Aria AlpertPhotographer: Joan Allen

I love to cook. Am obsessed with food. I really am. I admit it. Always have been. Enthusiastically tried every healthy diet there is, fervently read cookbooks, food magazines, researching recipes online, love watching cooking shows, could spend all day in a supermarket, only purchase organic produce, religiously shop at the local farmers market, only like to support restaurants/chefs that use seasonal, local, organic food and will travel to an obscure gourmet food shop to purchase one ingredient. Some would say I’m a bit of a food snob. Well, I am. An organic food snob.

Choosing what to make is the hardest thing. Makes me crazy. My OCD perfectionism comes out in full swing. But once I do, in the kitchen I am in heaven. At peace. Happy. Creative. Expressive. I love it. I only cook healthy stuff. I forgot to mention that. Been into the healthy side of food for the past 10 years. Before that I was a whisky drinking, pill popping, baguette and Brie eating depressed young girl writing poetry and living in a warped dreamland of Hollywood thinking I was Dorothy Parker. You get the picture. It all came crashing down when I found out I was hypoglycemic. Oh yes and I had Candida. SO I did like any obsessive foodie does, I became fascinated with what I could and could not eat and got healthy. Through experimenting with different foods I began to make the connection between what I was eating and how it directly affected how I was feeling. I became a crazy food detective. The food and mood connection rocked my world. Yes I got a wee bit neurotic but you kinda have to in order to figure out what foods work with your body and what foods don’t. Through the process of elimination I slowly started to rebuild my body. My gut. My digestion. Myself. I started cookin’ my way into health! And if I was eating with some one and they got tired or their nose immediately became stuffed or they broke out in hives I knew it had to be from what they just put in their mouth. Blackhearted Monkie Attempts To Start A Garden, Again!

v 01 organic gardening 01 Blackhearted Monkie Attempts To Start A Garden, Again!Photographer: V 01 (cc)

Today is the day. I, V 01 will start my garden. YES WORLD I WANT TO BE A GARDENER. And this time I mean it.

I feel like an addict (addicted to the idea of gardening and not actually gardening). I have been saying I am going to garden, for almost 20 years (pathetic I know). I have had a few false starts, but this is actually the closes I have ever come to actually starting. Of course first and foremost, I had to pick out a visually appealing location. An area of the yard I could gaze at often. I am very visual and half the fun of gardening would be watching the thing become more beautiful with each passing day. Or maybe in my case, watching it wither, dry up and blow away. Oh lets hope not. Come on Green Monkie Juice, its time to pay off. (lots of images after the jump)

Part One | My Blessed Herbs Colon Cleanse

rawjudita herb colon cleanse 01 Part One | My Blessed Herbs Colon Cleanse

Day One

I feel a little apprehensive talking about my colon but I know so many of you out there are curious about cleanses and detoxes. I’ve done this particular cleanse four times in the past two years (once every 6 months). It’s a five day liquid fast kit that you can purchase online at blessedherbs.com for $89.50. The kit includes 30 packets of the Toxin Absorber which is a psyllium husk/bentonite clay/apple pectin/herbal formula you mix with apple juice and drink five times a day. The psyllium husks act as a broom to sweep debris from your intestines while the bentonite clay draws out toxins (sort of like a facial clay mask but for your GI system). You can enjoy fruit and vegetable juices in between the apple juice concoction and best to obstain from all solid foods. I’ve done different juice fasts in the past including the Master Cleanse for 14 days and enjoy this one the most. The fiber drink helps take the edge off my hunger and the ‘results’ you see in the bathroom are, well, satisfying. It’s a very thorough spring cleaning to say the least. The kit also comes with a jar of Digestive Stimulator pills that help gently move things along.

Akemi Tanaka | A Moveable Feast

sustainable bench 01 Akemi Tanaka | A Moveable Feast

I’m a veritable addict for collapsible, multi-functional furniture. Panels that slide to reveal unexpected compartments and seemingly unlimited possibilities. So it’s no surprise I fell fell hook, line and sinker with designer Akemi Tanaka ‘s collection of “now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t” tables. The Tagei Table slides playfully into a bench for two with end tables to match. With this kind of versatile style and function any of us can live large in a small space.

“The convertibility factor makes it ideal for small spaces,” says Brooklyn-based Tanaka. “A lot of the time, for small spaces, you have to bring in kitchen chairs or stools when you have people visiting, and it doesn’t really fit the environment of people getting together and hanging out in the living room. But this encourages relaxation and communication.” If storage is more important to you than seating, remove the seat cushion and you’ve got a hideaway for your remote controls, magazines and other coffee table clutter. The Real G! Full Hour Pilot Show

We put together a full hour long Real G show to test out the concepts of a green lifestyle show with our unique dark green twist. The music for the most part is just temp music and wouldn’t make it to the real show. If some powerful producer likes what they see, email us at showpilot@gliving.com.The show is very rough, and not done exactly as we would have liked. We wanted to create a live audience show, but just couldn’t squeeze them into our studio, which was built into a real green house in Venice California.

Pilot Description

The Real G is fast, furious and alternatively fueled.

Darker, cooler and edgier than its cousin green….‘G’ is where mind-expanding knowledge, eye-popping aesthetic, plant-based sustenance and beats per minute collide. ‘Real’ because we keep it that way. We introduce viewers to an organic lifestyle, which doesn’t cost a fortune or look like crap.

Each slick, sexy, sixty minute episode is shot ‘as live’ and features cutting edge fashion, design, cars, news, food, celebrities and music. While guests, bands and green chefs interact with our hosts at The Real G’s modern stylish studios in Venice, CA, our team of roving reporters hit the runways, highways, green carpets and more to bring us the best and the brightest of this emerging lifestyle.

Beau Soleil One Price Sleek Organic Fashion (Almost)

beausoleil09 01 Beau Soleil One Price Sleek Organic Fashion (Almost)

Imagine if you will, ladies, that you’ve got a big night out on the town. You have to look your best. What better choice than a sexy bamboo number like the beau rome by Beau Soleil?

Beau Soleil was founded by New York entrepreneur Anne Salvatore Epstein and her husband. Having worked with companies like as Marc Jacobs and IISLI, Epstein realized she wanted to create a organization that offered organically made – yet fashionably tasteful – clothing. Taking what she’d learned from her previous experience in the fashion industry, Epstein wanted Beau Soleil to be kind to both the environment and those who worked for it.

Beau Soleil’s products are created using organic materials such as bamboo, vegetable- dyed organic cottons and other recycled materials. They’re sexy, affordable, if you have $275 in your pocket, which seems to be the favorite price point for almost everything and of course the most important part, everything is completely sustainable.

When You Need A Mobile Home But Hate Mobile Homes | The Canadian Mini Home

mini home 03 When You Need A Mobile Home But Hate Mobile Homes | The Canadian Mini Home

Pre-fab homes have been around for a while now, but here’s one worth watching on video. This design is called Mini Home, and as you can see, it’s well named. The design is basically a well-insulated trailer, with some smart design choices and green building materials. This trailer isn’t too different from a regular trailer you might find on a Texas lot, except for the materials and tasteful design. The one big difference is the cost. This trailer is coming in at $400 plus a square foot, which is amazingly high, even for a specialty trailer.

Here in L.A. the average house is coming in at $200 to $250 per square foot on the West Side, and the luxury ones are coming in at $350 to $500, depending on land cost and finishes. So, $400 for a small box is a lot. But with the economics aside, the idea is great and the intention is amazing. So, we hope the price can drop and the design expanded. We would love to see more sections working together to make up a whole house. Maybe two or three modules.

After the jump to the next page, there is a video by HGTV about the mini home. You get a full tour.

Sir David Attenborough Asks The Question: Can We Save Planet Earth?

Sir David Attenborough’s documentary Can We Save Planet Earth. The show presents potential solutions to global warming, followed by a panel discussion about the road ahead. Acknowledging the scientific consensus on the issue, the debate will steer clear of the pointless “skeptics vs. alarmist” angle and focus on what we can do as individuals, a nation and a species to avert the impacts of climate change.

Attenborough’s film lays out seven components of a sane response to global warming – strategies and targets from the household to big industries and government. But each one has implications, and many – like a growing reliance on nuclear power – are highly contentious. Our goal is to debate these strategies in a positive and constructive spirit: combating the paralysis of swirling fears with concrete ideas for informed action.”

SPECIAL GUESTS:

  • Bob Mills, Alberta Tory MP, Chair of the Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development
  • Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party
  • Terry Glavin, Author, Waiting for the Macaws
  • Mark Nantais, President, Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association
  • Glen Murray, Chair, National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy
  • Modern Clean Electric and Powerful, The Neue Electric Scooter

neue electric scooter 01 Modern Clean Electric and Powerful, The Neue Electric Scooter

I have been keeping my eye out for a new electric scooter or motorbike to use when I need to get somewhere fast or a little further away. Unfortunately nothing has really jumped out at me. Most of the Scooters or Motorcycles which use electric motors, cost a small fortune and can’t even go much further than the electric bike I already own. That is until now. A dull sounding company called KLD Technologies, has come out with the Neue Scooter. They have priced the Neue Scooter to compete with the gas powered Vespa Scooter, coming in at $3288 and $3888. The scooter using new nano-crystaline technology to improve efficiency over traditional iron-core motors and it eliminated the need for a transmission. The scooter does an impressive 65 mph and has a range of 100 miles if your average speed is 25 mph. Which in city driving, would be reasonable.

This is a pretty big deal, when you think about the competition. The VX-2 scooter by Vetrix, cost a cool $8,500 and only has a range of 35 to 55 miles. There is also the electric MotorCycle called the Enertia, which comes in at a really steep price of $12k, which also has similar speeds and distances as the VX-2.

Now your starting to see how special this Neue Scooter just might be. The only thing that gives me real pause is the heftiness of the design. I haven’t seen one in person yet, but from the photos, it looks a little bit tiny to me. I personally like the look of the Enertia, but that price tag is just not practical. When the Neue starts shipping, I may just be the first person in line.
