Sarma’s new section in GreenChefs is almost ready and will be launched soon with a bunch of mouth watering recipes from her restaurant, Pure Food and Wine in New York. If you are in NY and haven’t yet gone to Pure to try this amazing food, you need to. I can’t praise the food, atmosphere and service there enough. It is the best raw restaurant I’ve been to, and I’ve been to a lot of them.
Military Waste in Our Drinking Water
By Sunaura Taylor and Astra Taylor
From AlterNet via Truthout – Friday 04 August 2006
In 1982 our family was living on the southside of Tucson, Ariz., in a primarily working class and Latino neighborhood not far from the airport. That year Sunaura was born with a congenital birth defect known as arthrogryposis, a condition that severely impedes muscle growth and requires her to use an electric wheelchair. On nearby blocks, women were giving birth to babies with physical disabilities and neighbors were dying of cancer at worrisome rates. Over time, we learned that our groundwater was contaminated.
Most of us are vaguely aware that war devastates the environment abroad. The Vietnamese Red Cross counts 150,000 children whose birth defects were caused by their parents’ exposure to Agent Orange. Cancer rates in Iraq are soaring as a result of depleted uranium left from the Gulf War. But what about closer to home?

Today the U.S. military generates over one-third of our nation’s toxic waste, which it disposes of very poorly. The military is one of the most widespread violators of environmental laws. People made ill by this toxic waste are, in effect, victims of war. But they are rarely acknowledged as such.On Sept. 11, 2001, we were living together in New York City. In the months following the attack on the World Trade Center, the media and government routinely informed a fearful citizenry of the importance of clean drinking water. Terrorists, they warned, might contaminate public sources with arsenic. We were instructed to purchase Evian along with our duct tape. Continue Reading / Additional Photos / Videos

If you missed the American Scholars Symposium aired on July 29th and July 30th on C-Span, here’s a video of some of the conference highlights. The 2 day conference was presented by Charlie Sheen, Alex Jones, William Rodriguez, Prof. Steven E. Jones, LT. COL. Bob Bowman, Webster Griffin Tarpley, Dylan Avery, and Prof. James Fetzer. Plus many other speakers from high-level government positions, authors, professors, scientists, terrorism experts, and celebrities. It was attended by over 1200 people.
It is interesting to see more and more scholars and scientists come forward in the scientific community with their analysis and hypothesis on what caused the major destruction on 9/11. It is quite compelling when looking at the proposed evidence, eyewitness reports and footage of the destruction. Nothing is a smoking gun of hard evidence as to who all had their hand in it or not, but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence that appears very incriminating. There are however a lot of scientific explinations given how the identical, symmetrical and straight down free fall coplapses of all 3 buildings was probably caused by a more complex scheme then just the plane crashes and fires as proposed by the 9/11 commission. And I think Bush himself says it best, “We cannot wait for the final proof, the smoking gun could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.” Or the smoking gun against them could come in the form of loss of liberty, justice, and WWIII, maybe?
Recent scientific Zogby polls a few months ago showed that 49% believe that the Government had foreknowledge of the attacks and deliberately choose not to act, and 66% believe that there was a coverup and there should be an investigation. Other Zogby polls show that 52% to 43% of Americans want Congress to consider impeaching President Bush for illegal wiretapping of Americans. What’s amazing to me is how after the known and admitted history of lies and public illusions of this Gov. how they can still retain any credibility among the public. That is an amazing accomplishment in itself. Makes me want to study psychology and sociology. I guess people have a hard time believing just because they’ve done it thousands of times before that they would do it again? Surely history never repeats itself right?
One of the Declassified documents Alex Jones mentions in the video is called Operation Northwoods. You can download the pdf of that official memorandum here. While the plan in it ultimately was rejected by John F. Kennedy, I think it clearly shows just how the highest level of the US Gov. thinks, plans and schemes in order to justify whatever objective they have. It shows what they are willing to do, how many illusions and lies they are willing to tell and how much destruction and violence they are willing to carry out on innocent civilians in order to achieve their agenda. This is how they think and operate in the “inside”. What we see on the outside is usually just what they want us to see. This document is written by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1962. The subject of it is “Justification for US Military Intervention in Cuba” Some of the proposed actions included sinking a boatload of Cuban refugees, faking a Cuban airforce attack on a civilian jetliner, and blowing up a U.S. ship in Cuban waters and then blaming the incident on Cuban sabotage.
Here is an excerpt from it. “This plan, incorporating projects selected from the attached suggestions, or from other sources, should be developed to focus all efforts on a specific ultimate objective which would provide adequate justification for US military intervention. Such a plan would enable a logical build-up of incidents to be combined with other seemingly unrelated events to Camouflage the ultimate objective and create the necessary impression of Cuban rashness and irresponsibility on a large scale, directed at other countries as well as the United States. The plan would also properly integrate and time phase the courses of action to be pursued. The desired resultant from the execution of this plan would be to place the United States in the apparent position of suffering defensible grievances from a rash and irresponsible government of Cuba and to develop an international image of a Cuban threat in the Western Hemisphere.”
Even though that particular operation was never implemented only because J.F. Kennedy disapproved it, would you consider it conspiring to manufacture a false consent for war by blaming their own actions and violence on those who they want to attack? This is what the military calls false flag operations. It is nothing new.
A background note, to appreciate the report you need to understand the author who the author is and know why his words carry so much weight. Ignacio Chapela, was an assistant professor in the Environmental Science Department at the University of California-Berkeley in 1998, pharmaceutical giant Novartis signed a $25,000,000 deal with Berkeley’s College of Natural Sciences. The university Board closed the deal without the consulting the faculty.
In exchange for the funding, Novartis gained exclusive patent rights to one-third of all of research and direct influence over the specific areas of the college’s research. The corporate control of research was a serious concern for the faculty. Many worried what would happen if their work resulted in discoveries unfavorable to the corporate agenda. Ignacio Chapela would find out that an inconvenient truth would not be tolerated.
Chapela discovered GMO contamination of Mexican maze. The GMO crops were prohibited and he set out to publish his findings in the Journal Nature. The biotechs instantly launched attacks. Their attempts to discredit and silence Chapela read like a dime store crime novel. The implications of censorship sent shockwaves through the research community and the American media maintained its silence as it does with all subjects relating to GMO crops and genetically engineered foods.
Chapela has refused to be silenced and is one of the heroes of the anti-GMO movement. If you would like more about the events surrounding the Monsanto and Novartis attacks on Chapela there are links to good summaries. For Chapela’s position on GMOs here are his position papers. What follows is his report.
I’m back to Vancouver for the summer, it’s nice to be home. My focus up until September will be finishing my new book. It will be based on the theory of THRIVE, but will be a full-scale diet book to compete with The Zone, GI Diet, South Beach Diet, etc. It will include 75 recipes and a 12-week meal plan. It will be published in March of 2007 by Penguin. The title will be The THRIVE Diet; the subtitle has yet to be determined.
In September I’ll be back on tour. I have rough dates now, but will confirm them later.
I’ll be speaking at the Toronto Vegetarian Association’s food fair at 3pm on September 9th and 10th. I’ll then have speaking dates in the Ottawa area as well as Montreal and Quebec City. From there I’ll be speaking at events in the San Francisco area including World Vegetarian Day in Golden Gate Park on September 30th. From there I’ll be attending a large natural food trade show in Baltimore called Expo East, then will speak at events in the New England area. Like I say, I’ll get back to you with the details.
In the mean time, here’s an article about raw food, a topic I’m being asked more and more frequently.
Raw food article
As a society, we are inundated with an abundance of nutrient deficient foods. Eaten primarily for convenience, processed and refined foods have resulted in an overall decline in health and elevated medical costs. Processed foods are usually high in refined carbohydrates and calories yet we have to consume so much more of them to fill up due to their absence of usable nutrients.
Due to our insatiable desire for quick, convenient energy on the go, our streets are crammed with coffee, donut, and fast food establishments. This solves the convenience problem and does provide a short term energy solution through stimulation. However, it offers nothing to curb the payment that the body will inevitably endure if this route is regularly taken. Consumption of stimulating, nutrient deficient food can only occur for so long before the body becomes either exhausted or sick and where the body goes, the mind is sure to follow. Pollinating insects are indispensable to the reproduction of the 80% of terrestrial vegetation represented by flowering plants that produce seeds: flying from flower to flower to gather pollen (the male fertilizing material), they transport it to the stigma of a female flower, allowing fertilization to occur. For several years now, scientists have thought that this free service nature has offered the last 140 million years is being threatened by the decrease in biodiversity. Just ask Arturo, the fashion stylist I met at the Yogi Times eco-fashion shoot. For readers who don’t know, stylists are the people in charge of finding the hottest, newest clothes for a photo shoot. They spend days shopping and preparing for the shoot and also make sure the clothes look fabulous in front of the camera (steaming, pinning etc.). To the left, Molly of Yogi Times and I before the day started.

Being a G style fashionista doesn’t have to cost more than being a traditional fashionista. Take for example, the tapered pant. I was taken back when I saw the first tapered pant come back into style. Now they’re everywhere, and I’ve certainly hopped on the bandwagon–G style.
Summer Bowen here. You’ll be seeing me on the G Living Network talking about green fashion and sustainability. I’m looking forward to bringing you new and interesting stories about buying green. We’ll have a great time talking to pioneer fashion designers, learning about sustainable fabrics, and reviewing the latest eco-styles.
