For those of you not fortunate enough to be on this year’s guest list (or able to pay $500 for a ticket) G Living will be your eyes and ears at this year’s 17th annual Environmental Media Awards (EMAs). We are taking G LIVING’s REAL G on location, couch and all. We will make sure Nobel Prize winner, Former Vice President Al Gore, and all his Hollywood friends get cozy on the G Living Couch and get real!
Blue-Eyed Son’s Andrew Heilprin is the former front man for 40 Watt Domain (the group that created the sonic surf smoke punk genre) whose album “West of Lincoln” shows off the singer/songwriter’s stripped down, acoustic side. An avid surfer and outdoorsman, Andrew recently stopped by to perform an exclusive 2-song set on The Real G and chat about his environmental concerns.
I caught up with Andrew this afternoon via telephone to find out what he’d been up to since his “great” (his word) experience on The Real G. He said he’d gone “to Mexico and scored some insane surf,” which he’s editing footage of right now for possible use on his website blueeyedson.com.
Seeing a model posing for “G” a.k.a. eco-jeans or walking the runway for Ethical Fashion Show is admirable and sexy, but Summer Rayne Oakes is more than just a pretty face making commendable fashion statements. She’s a smart beauty who has figured out how to combine her image with her real interests and has become an earnest activist and entrepreneur. Heading up SRO (after her initials), a consulting company focused on sustainable business strategies, Oakes is using her background in science and her cause related modeling, and now travels the world helping companies tie in style with sustainability.
It’s one thing to read that Oakes graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Natural Resources and Entomology, but it’s another to hear her speak her mind on environmental issues. She is, of course, still a pretty face, but the beauty falls to the wayside and you’re left listening to a confident, comfortable, and very intelligent female communicate with passion on a subject that has been close to her heart since youth the environment.
My favorite photo from Chris Jordan’s show, Running the Numbers, is the first one I saw: Jet Trails. 11,000 white jet trails set against a soft blue sky gave off an ethereal feel while evoking a sense of childhood adventure and freedom something similar to staring at airplanes and cloud formations in the sky at seven. Impulsively, I wanted to melt into the photograph and experience flight, take me into it and away from the mess of life on earth.
But regardless of my reaction to the photo, Chris Jordan’s 11,000 jet trails are a visual representation of the number of commercial flights in the U.S. every eight hours. Of course, the real meaning behind the pretty picture is the effect these thousands of jet trails have on our environment. Jordan is reminding dreamers like me that the mess is also being created in air.
When G Living told me I’d be cruising around with an actor named “Brad” in his electric car, I was like, “Whoa! I wonder if Angie and the kids’ll be in the back seat?”
“No,” they answered. “Not Brad Pitt. Brad Dourif.” I went to the Internet Movie Database to make sure I knew who they were talking about, and when I saw that the character actor had a amazingly diverse resume dating back to an Oscar-nominated performance in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, I was like, “Whoa! That’s even cooler than Brad Pitt!”
The ride was fun. And so was our chat, which extended far beyond movies and electric cars.
Which visual would you remember? Eva Mendes in Vogue Magazine Nude Wrapped In Plastic or sitting in a cafe stirring a coffee? If you had a PSA to make and Hollywood tossed you a few stars, such as Eva Mendes, Ben Affleck, Reese Witherspoon, and Garth Brooks, what would you do with them. Well if you are Divided We Fall, you would take these stars and make the most boring video possible.
Take Garth Brooks and have him act like he is fixing a chandelier. But Eva Mendes in a cafe and have her stir some coffee. Or Ben Affleck building itsy bitsy furniture for a doll’s house? (Yes, a doll’s house). Or Reese Witherspoon window shopping for shoes? These are the inexplicable visuals for a new PSA for Divided We Fail. We think they should have gone with Vogues idea, and let Eva’s real talents shine. Face it she is good at looking hot with an attitude, which would sell me on just about anything.
Q’orianka sat down with us a while back and told us how much she loved her Honda Fuel Cell (video below). Now it looks like she has scored an upgrade. The new Honda FCX Clarity, which is another million dollar car Honda leases at a major loss, to a few selected individuals. The lucky few all live in California and they serve as beta testers for the technology, as well as sales tools. Seeing them drive around excites a future customer base for Honda.
Here is what Q’orianka said when she picked up the car: “Since my first car was the Honda FCX, I am proud to say that I have never pumped a gallon of gasoline,” said Kilcher. “As a young person, I feel it is my responsibility to always try my best to think about the consequences of my actions and choices as a consumer, and the impact they have on our planet.”
Kilcher, winner of numerous environmental youth awards, is the world’s youngest FCX Clarity owner at 19 years old. The zero-emissions vehicle can be refueled at a Shell hydrogen station in West Los Angeles, which is the first retail hydrogen station to produce hydrogen from water via a roof-mounted electrolysis unit.
I thought maybe you needed a music break, so I dug up a little Depeche Mode. I have always been into their music, since the very beginning. But it wasn’t until the live concert album 101, that I officially became a Mode Monkie. That album seem to speak volumes about my own life. Every song seem to touch on a subject which I myself was struggling with. I was in my mid teens and still figuring out what the hell this world was all about. Who is this god everyone seems to blindly believe in and if he is so good, why is our world so screwed up? This is the same question the song Blasphemous Rumours had the courage to ask about.
It’s amazing after all these years, they are still cranking out powerful music. Their latest release is called Sounds of the Universe. They decided to sell the album before they even finished it on Apples iTunes. If you purchased it in advance, you actually got two albums, with songs, remixes and videos. The cool part was, as they finished something you instantly got it. You didn’t have to wait until some official release date when everything was done. After the official release date, all the extra’s disappeared. If you waited to long, you lost out. I guess that was their way of rewarding the devoted fans. People who trust them and actually paid in advance. I am glad I was one of the devoted. I have an extra 10 songs / remixes and behind the scene videos of them making the album. Pretty cool, don’t you think?
I posted a live performance video below for the first single called Wrong. After the jump I posted several more classics. Now click play and get your mode on!
So, it is out in the open, I am confessing once again my un-shakable love for Lykke Li. I love everything about them, including their strange odd take music and visuals. There is just something about the entire bands weird geeky take on being a band. They dance around in their underwear, in some ones, one room apartment, while filming it, to make a music video. How could they possibly think that was going to be be cool? But of course it was, right?
Well, here are a few more videos of Lykke Li, including a live performance on some Holland Tv Show. More videos after the jump. Also, checkout my previous post about the very monkie band.
Today on G Living’s ROOM101. Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of Congressman Dennis Kucinich joins Sarah Backhouse for an in-depth two part conversation about her life before Dennis and what life is like on the road during the race for the Presidency.
In this interview we will cover: Meeting Dennis, War in the Middle East, War and The Environment, Greener Government, and what the future looks like. Sit back and enjoy a special Room101 with Elizabeth Kucinich.
Calling Cameron Diaz just a celebrity is selling her way too short. I mean, lumping her in with the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and that Spencer Pratt guy, is just wrong. Yes, she is part of the Hollywood buzzing engine, and yes, she is the highest paid actress in town, but she doesn’t act like it. She acts more like a Green Peace volunteer than a super celeb. When the magazine Marie Claire, asked Cameron to be their Cover Girl for the upcoming July issue, she turned the tables and asked them to come along with her as she filmed a documentary about what people are willing to do to save themselves, the planet and just maybe our future.
As Cameron hit the streets to talk with the average person, she quickly came to some sad conclusions, we really might just be screwed. “I want to leave you with this thought,” Diaz says to the woman. “After all you’ve told me . . . what would it take for you to do something to change your environment?” The woman, speechless, looks like she’s going to cry.
“I’m sad,” Diaz says later, in the car on the way to a Mexican joint for dinner. “It’s just sad.” She drains a plastic water bottle and tosses it on the floor of the car. “And I’m unhappy about the waste I just produced.” Diaz and Dylan, sitting next to her in the backseat, conclude that we as a people are summarily, environmentally “fucked.” In fact, that quickly becomes the leitmotif of the trip, and it cracks them up every time. Diaz, out of the blue: “You know what we are?” Dylan: “Let me guess—fucked?” More after the jump.
Okay so the book really isn’t about the G Living Monkies or even about me the Monkie Dark Overlord, but it should be. I am the darkest, greenest, juice guzzling monkie on the planet. I need a little praise too. I am just joking, I would guzzle green juice if anyone praised me or not. I am just that kind of Monkie.
The book (Thanking The Monkey) is by author Karen Dawn and is described as a book about Rethinking The Way We Treat Animals. No, it’s not a scared straight kind of book, with night video images of lab animals with their brains attached to shock devices. I think its a lighter fun type of book, in the same vain as the Skinny Bitch Books by my friend Rory Freedman. Her books are still on the NYTimes Best Seller List, how cool is that! Now to be honest, I haven’t seen the book yet, I just stumbled across a video on Youtube, which I posted below. In the video all the people I know are in the video and they even used my photo of Darrell Hanna with the rescued calves from Animal Acres.
Soon, I will go out and get a copy of the book and report back what I think of it. But until I get one, here is the official book description from the publisher and if you get a copy before me, post your thoughts below!
