Celebrities Do Their Part To Provide Aid After Cyclone Disaster

Say what you will about the often questionable morals or wardrobe choices of the many bright stars shining in the celebrity firmament — but when disaster strikes, you can usually count on some of Hollywood’s finest and classiest to rush to the front of the line to lend their support.

The skeptics are always quick to come back with “it’s easy for celebs to help… they’re rich.” But generosity has nothing to do with the size of your wallet; it’s all about whether or not it occurs to you to do something.

Not On Our Watch, the humanitarian organization with a mission “to focus global attention and resources towards putting an end to mass atrocities around the world”, has put up $500,000 to help the devastated victims of the recent Myanmar cyclone. Founded by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, David Pressman and “Ocean’s Eleven” producer Jerry Weintraub, the foundation “has granted over $6 million dollars towards the crisis in Darfur” last year alone (via their website) and is now turning its attention toward the millions of Burmese killed and left without shelter by Cyclone Nargis.

According to Ecorazzi, “the group will give $250,000 to Save the Children for relief efforts to suffering children and families” and then provide an additional group match of $250,000.

But they’re not the only ones. Just Jared writes that new parents Joel Madden and Nicole Richie have filmed a PSA on behalf of UNICEF, urging people to contribute money: “Because UNICEF has been on the ground in Myanmar for 60 years,” say the couple, “they are able to deliver emergency supplies right now. Please help UNICEF do whatever it takes to save children’s lives.”

Clearly, Hollywood has risen to the occasion. Now what about you? Keep in mind that you don’t need to be rich or famous to lend your support. Both Not On Our Watch and UNICEF are in need of cash-free help in the form of volunteer efforts. So, check ‘em out and do what you can. After all, we all share the same planet.
