Conserving Energy the PG&E Way

Looking for ways to conserve energy, but don’t know how to start? Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) wants to help. The company is looking for volunteers for their new energy conservation program entitled “SmartAC”. With the SmartAC program, consumers give PG&E control of their indoor home temperature.

Now that we’re experiencing hotter than normal temperatures outside, AC units are running full force and spending a lot of energy. PG&E is offering to pay consumers $25 dollars to install the new SmartAC system in their homes. The company would control the consumers system by adjusting the AC unit when the usage of electricity in the area is critical. According to an article by Robert Rodriguez of California’s Fresno Bee, “the thermostat would be raised no more than 4 degrees and for no more than 4 hours at a time”. The system can also be overridden by the consumer during special situations where there may be a greater need for the home to be cooler.

I think more electric companies around the United States should follow in the footsteps of PG&E by offering this type of program. Not only would it save a great deal of money, it would allow consumers to become more aware and involved in conserving energy.

On second thought, wouldn’t it be great if PG&E could also control people’s TVs? I’d love to see them block some of these stupid reality shows that pop up like a bad disease; talk about wasted energy!
