Five Celebrities Who Could Be Greener

I’m not a big fan of greenbashing, but you might be, so here’s a list compiled late last year by Green Daily of the planet’s 5 least green celebrities (with my own personal devil’s advocates added):
Not sure if these are in any particular order, but first up is R&B heartthrob Chris Brown. In a November 2007 interview with Blender Magazine, the singer was asked if he wore underwear or preferred to go commando. Brown’s response was “Underwear. I wear a new pair of drawers every day. I won’t wash my drawers and put ‘em back on. I just throw them away.” Green Daily called his wasteful habits “positively whack”. But in Chris’s defense, he’s 18 and calling himself (in the same interview) a “legend”. How can we possibly take anything he says seriously?
John Travolta’s plane collection and private runway at his home in Florida
John Travolta made the list for owning and flying five private jets, which GD says spew out “an estimated 800 tons of carbon emissions per year”. I can’t think of any way to justify this (and I have my own non green-related beefs with Travolta), so I’ll just move on to…
Barbra Streisand. The singer/actress/director is an alleged resource abuser. GD says she “spent $20,000 last year to water her lawn, owns five homes, and air-conditions her $12,000 square foot barn.” If this is true, Barbra needs a little talking to about conservation. In her defense, however, she did pony up $1 million dollars in proceeds from one of her ridiculously overpriced concert tours for the Clinton Climate Initiative, so she must have some sort of an eco conscience. But come on, Babs — I get that you want to keep your lawn Evergreen, but Enough Is Enough with the water.
Speaking of water, Jennifer Aniston made plenty of money on Friends — why on earth does she do product endorsements? But she does, and Green Daily cites her sponsorship of Glaceau’s Smartwater — which they write is sold in “an environmentally-unfriendly plastic bottle, which is then purchased and likely tossed in the trash upon consumption” — as a reason to put her on the least green list. I, on the other hand, find this complaint to be a little indirect. As long as we’re stretching, why don’t we say she contributes to global warming by making one dreadful movie after another that forces people to burn fossil fuels as they drive to the multiplex to see them?
Which brings us to Cindy Crawford. Why she went from being an animal rights supporter to posing in fur on the cover of Russian Vogue is anyone’s guess. Maybe she saw one of Jennifer Aniston’s movies and was temporarily traumatized into an irrational frenzy… But my question to Cindy is, with all the terrific looking fake fur out there…why?
I suspect if you dig deep enough, you could find something non-green about any celebrity. But thanks to Green Daily, we don’t have to. Thanks for the list.
