A lack of energy is a common complaint for many of us. It can hit hard in the afternoon — that no man’s land after lunch and before clocking out, which seems to stretch on forever. We’ve all reached for chocolate or another double espresso to get us through. Fitness experts would suggest exercise to fight flagging energy (but then again, that’s their solution for everything — nutters). But from experience, when you’re feeling tired, the last thing you want to do is hit the gym.
Which brings us back to food. What healthy dietary fixes are out there? Thankfully, that’sfit has complied a list of the five most energizing foods.
Dark Honey: A teaspoon of dark honey in your tea or on toast is a slow release energy source that’s more satisfying than regular sugar. Honey is also packed with nutrients, and the darker the better. Raw agave nectar provides similar benefits with the added bonus of it being a low G.I. food.
Beans: I’m on the bean bandwagon, are you? You should be. Even a small amount of pinto or black beans can satisfy while providing a slow burning energy. They’re a tasty and nutritious accompaniment to salads or soup. While it’s best if you can prepare them at home, canned varieties do offer convenience. Just watch the salt and fat content.
Citrus: If you’re feeling sluggish, a grapefruit or orange will deliver an immediate burst of energy. Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, the fiber in citrus fruits will keep you full while the natural sweetness provides pep.
Trail Mix: Mmm, mmm. I adore trail mix, maybe even too much. Consisting of nuts, seeds, dried fruits and even a little chocolate, trail mix is a handy and healthy snack. The nuts deliver protein while the natural sugars in the fruit will give you extra vitality. Just be sure to watch portion control; this healthy treat is very moreish, but eating an entire bag adds up to a ton of calories. Try and limit yourself to a handful.
Dark Berry Juice: Packed with antioxidants, dark berry juice (cherry, pomegranate, grape, acai, blueberry, etc) will revitalize the most run down among us. If you’re watching your sugar content, dilute with water for an even healthier beverage.
That’s it. Now that you’re in the know, there’s no more excuse to eat crap. The key is to be prepared — so banish vending machines in favor of home-brought treats.
Have a great afternoon.
