Ford is up to something and I like it. Maybe you’re starting to tire of the new concept cars; it seems like they are all starting to look the same. When I saw the Ford Airstream, I thought, “yawn, there’s a concept SUV/van” — but then I saw the inside and thought, “Ford has finally done something right, something hip, and something I might just want to own.”
The Airstream is a concept hybrid that is one part spaceship, one part Econoline van, one part hip-style-funky-fun and 3 parts future of automobile technology. The outside seems to be made of ultra-reflective stainless steel and the inside has both funky (egg-shaped driver seat, plush velour interior) and modern (360 degree DVD screen that can even simulate a lava lamp) amenities.
Perhaps the most important part is the 3-way power supply. It runs on Ford’s HySeries Drive powertrain that uses batteries, plug-in (110V and 220V), and hydrogen power. So add another low-to-no emission vehicle to your want list. It also looks like it could hit the road today without too many people gawking at it –- something not commonly found in “concept” cars. In fact autobloggreen has arranged for a test drive and they can blog about their travels right from the front seat.
But don’t look for full-scale production soon –- the Airstream is a concept, not a reality (especially given the hydrogen drive).
