Future Fashions | Top Designers Tackle Sustainability

Sustainable Bottega Veneta? Green Yves Saint Laurent? Ethical Burberry? Socially conscious Marni? Don’t pinch yourself. This isn’t an eco-fashion wet dream. FutureFashion is a runway show comprised of 30 looks from the world’s leading designers using only sustainable materials.
Held recently at Gotham Hall in NYC, FutureFashion is an initiative of leading non-profit and innovator of sustainable business solutions, Earth Pledge. “We are thrilled that the design community has embraced the challenge of designing with sustainable materials.
This group of talented designers has enormous influence over what we wear and how we express ourselves.” Says Leslie Hoffman, Earth Pledge Executive Director. “Sustainability is not a fad; it is a necessity for a healthy future. The leadership so beautifully expressed by these designers will help farmers, textile manufacturers, other designers and, of course, the customers, also embrace this vision.”
The impressive designer line included Behnaz Sarapfour, Bottega Veneta, Boudicca, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Derek Lam, Diane Von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Doo.Ri, Doro Olowu, Giambattista Valli, Givenchy, Isabel Toledo, Jil Sander, Marc Jacobs, Marni, Martin Grant, Martin Margiela, Michael Kors, Moschino, Narciso Rodriguez, Ralph Lauren, Rodarte, Rogan, Stella McCartney, Thakoon, Threeasfour, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent.
Garments were made with materials including “sasawashi, piña, bamboo, organic cotton and wool, corn-based fibers, recycled fibers or fabrics and biopolymers” with designers sourcing and producing locally as well implementing techniques to reduce the impact of manufacturing.
I was particularly impressed by the designs of Givenchy, Rogan, Behnaz Sarafpour and Burburry Prorsum. If you missed the show, don’t fret, you can still have a chance to catch these fabulously sustainable frocks in the windows of Barney’s flagship store on New York’s Madison Ave.
While the world’s top designers have proven they can go green, the next big question is…will they stay that way? Stay tuned.
