I’ll cop to owning more pairs of shoes than a person needs. But I think it’s fair to say that 95% of them — like most of my clothes — were either bought second hand or donated by people I know. (Having like-sized friends certainly has its benefits!) But for the most part, since I don’t dress up for work (or anything else, for that matter), I wear nothing but sandals. (And yes, I often wear them with socks like a German tourist. What are you gonna do about it?)
But I’m in good company, because supermodel Gisele Bündchen recently admitted to Germany’s Die Welt that she’s got more pairs of shoes than a person needs. (And I’ll bet she got most of them for free, like I did.) Though she says she’s never counted them, People magazine quotes her as saying she has “probably around 100”, adding that “it’s comparable to the way men love cars and watches.”
So, who better than a shoe-loving supermodel to design a range of eco-conscious flip flops? Gisele was in Berlin last week promoting her Ipanema GB2 flips that are not only 100% animal-free but made with a social conscience. All but 1% of surplus materials used in production is recycled. (Not sure what they’re doing with that 1%.)
Green Daily says the shoe line “will support water related projects in Brazil’s rainforests. A portion of the proceeds support WWF… a charity that promotes awareness about the preservation of water, encourages Brazilians and the government to protect river sources and use water responsibly.”
Gisele is no stranger to charities. In the past she’s lent her name and support to Africans with HIV, breast cancer, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and São Paulo’s Fome Zero (aka Zero Hunger), among other worthwhile organizations.
Gisele’s flip flops are made for men and women, but I probably won’t be wearing them because I don’t like the look of flip flops with socks. However, you can check them out here.
