Global Warming is Not Pug-Friendly

Bad news for Pugs and Bulldogs. Their cute little noses are going to be problematic as temperatures rise. Deadly even.

According to a recent Plenty article, Australian pet owners have been warned that global warming may bring about the decline of various short-nosed dog and cat breeds. It seems generations of inbreeding has led to respiratory ailments that cause breathing difficulties in higher temperatures. (I’m guessing that accounts for the panting noises these dogs make when they run or get excited.)

And since summer temperatures in Australia are suspected to hit highs of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (and climbing in years to come), it’s believed “that Darwin’s theory of evolution will soon see these breeds dying out.”

The article goes on to explain the difference between breeds and species. All dogs are the same genetic species, regardless of their physical differences, while various breeds were “created by humans through centuries of selective breeding.”

While losing a breed or two is not considered as genetically catastrophic as the extinction of an entire species, I’m sure there will be a lot of devastated pet owners out there.

And if you’re thinking of buying a puppy to grow up alongside your child, you might want to consider one with a fuller nose.
