Gore’s Nobel Speech Razes Bush Administration’s Failure To Act

Al Gore, our favorite friend of the environment, continued his doomsday prophecy this week during his speech as Nobel laureate, stating again that the earth is on a collision course with catastrophe.
But he did offer a way out. Gore stated: “We, the human species, are confronting a planetary emergency – a threat to the survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential even as we gather here. But there is hopeful news as well: we have the ability to solve this crisis and avoid the worst – though not all – of its consequences, if we act boldly, decisively and quickly.”
Bold, decisive, and quick – the anti-Bush philosophy on climate change. Although the Bush administration is willing to act quickly on terrorism (on dubious evidence at best), it has been anything but decisive with respect to reining in emissions – despite the ever-growing pile of sound scientific evidence. Unfortunately, in a tragic Shakespearean moment, we might discover with our dying gasp that it was actually we who terrorized ourselves. Warming the earth to its breaking point will unleash terrific consequences of disease, famine, and super storms more terrorizing than anything a radical fundamentalist can throw at us. And perhaps that is why the Bush Administration early on declared war on Mother Nature, pulling out of Kyoto and rolling back several progressive environmental reforms.
So, is Gore right? There’s a piece of me that smells a hint of propaganda in the former veep’s message, but if we look at the predictions, this is not a time for change through fits and starts. It will take bold action to reduce emissions, and despite Bush’s “dire economic consequences” rap, I have not seen any evidence showing that reducing emissions damages economies. The US has the industrial power and the know-how to create a new economy manufacturing clean energy products. Do we have the will (and a leader who will stand up and do it)?
If Jimmy Carter can put solar panels on the White House…
