Yeah Green is Universal | So is Dullness

Want to get up close with a great-white man-eater in “Jaws Lake”? Or test your physical and emotional strength by doing some extreme stunts on “Fear Factor Live”? (It’s worth eating the animal entrails, folks; a former contestant won George Clooney). Or scare yourself silly in the middle of 50-foot fireballs and exploding seaplanes in “Waterworld – A Live Sea War Spectacular”? If any of the above fits your definition of “fun”, read on…

On Saturday April 26th, Universal Studios Hollywood is celebrating Earth Day with a “free, family-friendly, eco-fair”. The “Entertainment Capital of L.A.” will celebrate this auspicious day with celebrities, over 30 interactive exhibits, a hazardous waste disposal drop-off and free parking for hybrids. Celebrities Melora Hardin from “The Office” and Lauren Koslow from “Days of our Lives” (Really? Is that the best NBC/Universal can do? Isn’t that like a bad day at the Brentwood Starbucks?) will autograph reusable bags and hand out CFCs. Exhibitor-wise, Bell’s Bug’s will demonstrate the impact creepy crawlies have on the environment, La Knitterie Parisienne will host an organic knitting display (sounds more exciting that watching VOC-free paint dry, doesn’t it?) while the Hollywood Beautification team will hand out free trees to locals.

The other big highlight of the eco-fair will be the collection of hazardous waste materials. Guests are invited to bring items for safe disposal, including “paint solvents, motor oils, cleaning products, pool and garden chemicals, auto and household batteries, monitors, printers, televisions, video games, cell phones, stereos and electronic toys”. Bringing at least one of these items will entitle you to free parking (as will the aforementioned hybrid driving).

Earth Day at Universal Studios Hollywood, where the eco is bountiful but the excitement — not so much. At least not for me.
