Green Music Festivals You Will Not Want To Miss

There was a time not so long ago when the phrase “green music festival” would have instilled horror in eve the most ardent music lover. Images of face painting, Hacky Sacks and pan flutes (among other world music elements) pretty much fit my definition of purgatory. Luckily for us, green music has come a long way since its genesis on the (lunatic) fringe. Now that all the excitement about Coachella has died down, it’s time to check out the other green music festivals worth marking on this year’s calendar. Our friends at Ideal Bite have kindly complied a short list:
Monterey Music Summit. Situated on the California coastline and featuring artists The Crystal Method, Ozomatli and Snoop Dogg, the festival is 100% carbon neutral. Organizers will provide water dispensers, plant trees and sell organic tees. May 30-June 1.
Bonnaroo. Artists Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, The Raconteurs and Ladytron will perform. This Tennessee-based Arts and Music Festival will spread social awareness through food drives, recycling, composting, a solar stage and eco-talks. June 12-15.
Lollapalooza. This year’s line-up outta Chicago is looking mighty hot: Radiohead; Rage Against the Machine; Nine Inch Nails; Mark Ronson; and Bloc Party are STA. A designated “Green Street” will educate music lovers on green issues while the fest encourages cycling and recycling. August 1-3.
Outside Lands. Radiohead, Beck, Cold War Kids and Ben Harper are amongst the artists performing this year at San Francisco’s annual music festival. Green highlights include cell phone recycling, a public transport guide and green tickets that can help reforest California. August 22-24.
Bumbershoot. This year’s Seattle-based music festival boasts Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, Ludacris and Mike Doughty. The festival is super socially responsible, using carbon-neutral power, signage printed on VOC free materials, using sustainable inks and vendors who compost and recycle grease for bio diesel. Sweet. August 30-Sep. 1.
If you’re in any of the above areas, be sure to check ‘em out. Hacky Sacks not included.
