Something New Sprouting Up in NYC, A Green Pre-School

Back in the day, my Japanese mother would pack me a super healthy lunch consisting of a whole-wheat cheese and lettuce sandwich, with tomatoes grown in our garden, accompanied by a flask of freshly squeezed orange juice. Needless to say, I was mortified — longing to be like the other kids in kindergarten who had white spaghetti waffles, green cordial and a packet of Cheetos. But some 30 years on, it looks like Mama knew best after all.
This fall, a new organic pre-school is opening up in New York. Located on Third Avenue near 93rd street, the school is being kitted out with eco-friendly paints, bamboo floors and low flow toilets. And rather than use plastic, the puzzles will be made of wood (and hopefully not coated in lead-based paint). I wonder what the snacks will be? Organic fruits, brown rice cakes and LÄRABARS perchance?
Founder and French ex-pat Christina Houri was inspired to create the green pre-school after seeing images of the dying polar bears in “An Inconvenient Truth”. The school’s educational philosophy will be akin to Montessori with “Bank Street’s developmental-interactive approach” and a French immersion program, all for a cool $12,995 per year.
I’m sure my Mama would approve.
