Have A Heart This Valentine’s Day

You know what I won’t be doing in three days time? Celebrating my least favorite holiday of the year — the highly irksome Valentine’s Day.
The annual amassment of cheap Chinese-made teddy bears and heart-shaped chocolates at my local supermarket turn my stomach, not my heart. Apart from all the waste Valentine’s Day generates – it’s the second largest card-sending holiday of the year – it’s plain cheesy.
However, if you’re the sort who can’t resist a holiday tradition, break the pattern and give something meaningful. Here’s are some truly innovative ideas from the UK’s Action Aid.
A pair of goats.
C’mon what could be more romantic than a couple of goats? Plus, they’re guaranteed not to chew through your favorite sweater because the benefactors will be the poorest households in Mozmbique — to whom there’s no sweeter gift than goat’s milk.
Yep, you read that right. And not matching gold ones like the Beckhams probably have, just a regular flushing variety to benefit Vietnamese school children who currently share a single dirty bowl with hundreds of their schoolmates.
We’re not suggesting you channel Amy Winehouse. We mean a real beehive. Your generous gift could help poor women in Ghana become beekeepers and harvest honey that will provide for their families.
A pickaxe, hoe and shovel.
What do you mean, “ominous”? How dare you! It’s perfectly innocent. A pickaxe, hoe and shovel could help struggling families in Haiti grow a range of crops to eat and sell.
With gifts as interesting as these, maybe I will indulge in a little Valentines action this year. I wonder if my husband will appreciate a donkey and a cart…?
