Hotel ElquiDomos | Watch the Stars in the Andes

If you’re looking for a real international adventure this year, you might check out the Hotel ElquiDomos in the Chilean Andes. From this high camp in Coquimbo you can gaze at the stars through some of the cleanest air on the planet. And if you stay at the hotel, you can even look through the opening in the top of your dome tent.

Built with sustainability in mind, Hotel ElquiDomos’ “rooms” are actual dome-shaped, canvass-covered Eco Domes from the company Eco Domos. The domes include loft beds and plenty of space to keep your hiking, star-gazing and general out-in-the woods gear.

For the eco-tourist, Hotel EquilDomos is one spot that you shouldn’t miss.

I’m a fan of domes — especially as wilderness getaways — because they blend in with the surroundings better than tin-roofed, log structures (although not as well as teepees or yurts). Fortunately, there are many companies out there providing alternatives to traditional building. In fact, just about anyone who has spent the night in a backcountry shelter can tell you where to look on the internet for some good ideas. And for those of you who are a bit more avant-garde, you might consider a dome for your home.

Check out a couple of alternatives at Pacific Domes and Whitepod.
