Hydromatic Technologies | Green Dry Your Clothes When Line Drying is Not an Option

I love hanging my clothes out to dry. It just feels right to let the sun and wind do the work rather than good old Mr. Electron. Unfortunately, considering where I live, I can only hang my clothes outside for about three months a year — unless I can figure out how to freeze-dry my wardrobe. Which means I’m destined to feel pangs of guilt in the winter when I fire up the dryer.

But now there’s a solution from Hydromatic Technologies that cuts dryer energy by half and drying times by 40%.

The hydronic technology is based on the age-old practice of heating water in one place and transferring that heat somewhere else. Hydromatic has perfected this technology for use in clothes dryers, making them safer, faster and more energy efficient. Right now dryers heat air directly using either electricity or natural gas. This hot air is then blown into the clothes compartment; it’s dangerous enough that there are over 15,000 clothes dryer fires each year in the U.S. (according the Hydromatic). Hydromatic is safer because the only thing heated directly is a non-toxic fluid that then heats the air that dries the clothes, and heating a liquid is much more efficient than heating only air.

What to look for. Starting this fall, you will see two products from Hydromatic — the Hydronic dryer, their flagship product, and the hydronic upgrade kit that will upgrade virtually any dryer to this new technology. There aren’t price estimates for the products yet, but Hydromatic quotes about $300 for a technician to upgrade your current dryer.

I typically don’t get excited about appliances, but this one will go a long way in reducing household energy consumption — which is good for the both the carbon footprint and the pocketbook. I’ll still use the sun and wind in the summer, but I look forward to making my necessary winter drying more efficient.

Now if I can just reduce the water use in my washer.
