Inconvenient Truth – The Opera – Inconvenient, Elitist, And No Doubt Expensive

There’s nothing like reaching the common man through the medium of…opera. Yeah right, all that black tie, high ticket prices and knowledge of Italian makes it a real crowd pleaser.
Well sound idea or not, the Associated Press reports that Italian composer Giorgio Battistelli has been assigned the task of turning Gore’s 2006 hit documentary into a 2011 Milan Opera House, full house. The composer is currently artistic director of Verona’s Arena.

I don’t know about you, but to me this sounds like a very bad idea. Isn’t it the anti Live Earth? While Gore’s last (successful) foray into the musical arena reached an estimated 2 billion people, the opera would reach at most a couple of hundred per night. Although part of me is curious to see how this event will be pulled off (who will play Gore?) — sadly like the rest of the world’s six billion without season tickets to the Milan Opera House, we’ll never find out.
