Is Your Shower Curtain Unhealthy?

Posted By G Living Staff Monkies On March 26, 2008 @ 3:56 pm In G Living | No Comments

Sure, the internet is flooded with scary information about PVC and its dangerous off-gassing. But it’s also full of solutions that are affordable and practical.

Take the bathroom, for example. Those of us who don’t have doors on the shower (which is my personal choice, even though they require frequent cleaning) probably have a plastic water-resistant shower curtain liner. You know the one: it’s that clear thing that repels water and keeps your decorative shower curtain – the one that’s most likely made of polyester and has a pattern on it – from getting wet.

But did you know that your plastic liner is probably constructed with PVC, which — when combined with hot water — releases phthalates into the air? And, according to the Wiki, studies “involving large amounts of phthalates” have revealed that it can cause “damage to the liver and testes and cause birth defects”. Yikes!

So, why not toss out your PVC liner and replace it with something healthier?

Restoration Hardware has one they call the Hotel Shower Curtain that’s made of white Oxford nylon. It’s mildew resistant, machine washable and it can be used all by itself, without a decorative thing in front of it. And it sells from $10 to $20. If you do insist on putting something warmer in front of it, check out one of the 100% organic cotton shower curtains at Kushtush Organics Eco Sleep Shop. They’re available in eco-safe colors like Incense and Sangrea and they’re also machine washable. One will run you about $65, but you can shower peacefully knowing you’ve chosen a healthier alternative. There are also shower curtains available online that are made from environmentally responsible hemp or bamboo. And there are probably ones I haven’t even found yet.

The point is, healthier living is not a huge challenge. Do a little research and you’ll find that good quality, stylish products without toxic chemicals are out there. And they’re just waiting for you to discover them.
