Kite For Sail | Maui Sailer Thinks Higher

Dan Tracy just may have revolutionized the boating industry. He may also have found a way to lessen our dependence on oil. How? With a kite.

Bypassing the time honored boat necessity, the mast, Tracy has developed a mechanism that enables his 24-foot Corsair trimaran to be powered by the wind. Looking like a large fishing reel, the gizmo helps steer the kite (the sort that’s used in kite boarding), which – because of its height – is able to harness stronger winds than those found just above the surface of the water.

The benefits? The winch that steers the kite requires only about five minutes for setup versus the hour to ninety minutes required for the traditional mast. Also, by using wind to power the boat, less fuel is needed. Much less, in fact. Tracy says he only burns gas when moving in and out of the harbor.

Will this catch on? If all goes according to Dan Tracy’s plan, it will. In fact, he fantasizes about kite powered cargo ships in the not so distant future – an advancement that could have an enormous benefits for the planet.

Can kite powered cars be far behind?
