Lapa Rios Ecolodge \ Relax in Costa Rica

Say you lived in Minnesota but had dreams of relocating to the rainforest of Central America — what would you do? Well, if you’re John and Karen Lewis, you’d sell everything you owned, buy a small tract of rainforest in Costa Rica and build an eco-lodge that would enable others to experience nature at its finest.

Set in over 1,000 acres of the region’s “last remaining lowland tropical rainforest”, Lapa Rios Ecolodge overlooks the breathtaking Pacific Ocean and backs onto the Corcovado National Park. A conservation program by The Nature Conservancy and Cederena will ensure that this rainforest will be “preserved into perpetuity”.

But luckily for you, you don’t have to wait forever to book yourself into one of the sixteen suiita-thatch bungalows that boasts wooden floors, screened wall windows, garden showers, private sun decks and the obligatory hammock — and did I mention the incredible views of the ocean and rainforest canopy?

As a bastion of ecotourism and sustainable development, Lapa Rios has garnered numerous awards from prestigious travel publications like Conde Nast as well as the Rainforest Alliance and the U.S. State Department. It’s easy to see why. The Ecolodge walks the talk by capturing methane gas from pigs that feast on food scraps, using solar energy to heat water and provide power during the day, and running on biodiesel to reduce carbon emissions by 75%.

But the true beauty of the Lapa Rios is its exquisite environs. With endless environmentally friendly activities like horseback riding, kayaking, rainforest hikes, surfing and bird watching, there’s plenty to do. Or not.

Oh, and it’s a lot warmer than Minnesota.
