I get it…some people simply have to drive a truck. I’m not saying I like it — I dislike fossil fuel-hogging SUVs as much as the next “G” conscious person (or anyone who hates traffic or soaring gas prices), but I concede to construction workers and cameramen who need to haul things that just don’t fit in a Mini Cooper.
Indian auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra is attempting to level the playing field with the “Scorpio” SUV and the “Appalachian” pickup truck. They will begin their lives as diesel trucks in 2009, but by 2010, they will morph — much like a Power Ranger — into a diesel-hybrid. If successful, Mahindra & Mahindra would be producing the first diesel-hybrid light trucks, projecting 30-35 mpg. With plenty of room for tools and soccer balls.
I’m not saying I love it. After all, hybrid still doesn’t mean “no gas.” It just means less gas. But it’s better than most of the trucks out there now.
It remains that the only “free” modes of transportation are walking and biking. Dancing, cart wheeling and hoola-hooping are also acceptable, but won’t get you very far.
