I don’t read Popular Mechanics very much, but seems like they are dabbling in green topics these days. Which is great, really, but they always seem to have a little edge about the subject. This latest green article is about a Monster Size Adobe semi-green house, which is the show case house at the New American Home Show. Popular Mechanics writer Harry Sawyers, doesn’t like the house, not because of the green details, but simply because it’s a bloated 8,000 sqft home, advertised as green.
I think Harry is missing the positive side of the bloated house. Yes, it’s big, fancy, expensive, but how is that any different than all the other bloated houses out there? At least now people who own a house like this, also want to buy green mass amounts of Green Stuff. See what I mean? More they want Green, the faster we all head to a green future, in our stylish, fancy, super green, petite houses. So, more power to the bloat house people!
Here are the house details:
“The New American Home, a show house featured at this week’s International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, seems to represent two extremes of American building impulses—lots of environmental innovation in an oversize package. The building isn’t just for gawking. It’s one of 14 similar houses for sale with price tags from $1 million to $4.5 million that include many of today’s sustainable technologies in an 8721-sq-ft spread. There is a reclaimed teak foyer table, a salvaged elm office floor, and the chaise lounge’s velvet and the countertops are made from scraps dutifully gathered from the grounds of mills and quarries. This green bling lives alongside some extravagant amenities: Flickering gas fireplaces pop up on vacant walls, the dog gets its own shower and the HDTVs are outnumbered only by the flat screen home automation panels so complex the interior designer had to learn how to turn on the lights. Handsome new LED bulbs save power—or would, if the house didn’t have so many hundreds of them. Solar panels heat hot water for the infinity pool. And damn, what a pool—complete with submerged, swim-up concrete bar stools. And there’s another bar outside the pool, and another in the basement.”
