What can I say, this Mission One Electric Bike really does kick my Ultramotor A2B Electric bikes ass. But I guess that isn’t really a fair comparison, because this electric bike really isn’t a bike, it’s more of a 150 mile electric monster, posing as a motorcycle. This thing even goes 150 miles without needing to be re-juiced. The bike showed up at the latest TED event, happening in Long Beach and is now all the buzz on the internet.
The bike was designed by a California start-up called Mission Motors, which has plans to build a limited run of 50 by next year at a price point of $69,000 each. I know what your thinking, if you take back your deposit on your long over due Tesla order, you could by two of these dream machines. Or better yet, if you get a bailout from the government, you can hold out for the Tesla and put a new deposit on a Mission One! Go for option two.
Why is it that all the sexy looking electric vehicles cost so freakin much? Can a simple electric motor and a few batteries really add up to $70K. If your not a bank CEO or a celebrity, you are just out of luck. The only electric vehicle most of us can even think of buying comes from Fisherprice, right?

Lithium Ion Batteries
In the design of battery packs for electric vehicles (EV’s), high-energy gives you range while high power gives you performance. The battery pack in a Mission Motorcycle gives you both. For years, batteries have been the limiting factor for EV’s. They were heavy, large, and expensive. Lithium-ion batteries have changed that landscape. When customers demanded longer battery-life out of cel phones and laptops, lithium-ion batteries responded by getting lighter and cheaper. Today’s laptop batteries carry three times as much energy and cost half as much as the best batteries available ten years ago. >>
High Performance Electric Motor
Mission motorcycles’ induction motor provides over 100 foot-pounds of torque. Unlike an engine, however, the torque curve on our electric is completely flat. The rider feels 100 foot-pounds of torque at a standstill, at 60 mph, and everywhere in between. Gasoline motorcycle require multiple gears in order to provide power at different speeds. The torque curve on our electric motor means that a Mission motorcycle can achieve gasoline sportbike performance with no gears. And all that power comes in a package about the size of a soccer ball.
Technology Meets Speed
At Mission, we are using technology to build a smarter ride. On a Mission Motorcycle, the onboard computer does more than run the bike. It comes fully equipped with data acquisition system and wireless communication capabilities. On a Mission Motorcycle, riders can capture ride data in real time and wirelessly download that data to a computer to share with friends. Gone are the days of tuning your engine with a wrench. On a Mission Motorcycle, you tune your ride in minutes with your laptop computer.
