Nature-Inspired Light Block From Brave Space Design | Retro with Modern Ethical Appeal

If you’re into modern modular home furnishings with hint of retro cool, look no further Brooklyn based green designers Brave Space Design. These guys have been racking up column inches in the hippest design publications — from Dwell and cool hunting to Surface and Plenty — and it’s easy to see why. The video game-inspired Tetrad Flat Shelving is a playful design classic, while the functional landscape of the Mountain Coat range rolls whimsical and practical into one.

Their latest design offering is the Light Block, a simple 7”x7”x7” cube, which boast nature-inspired designs. The fixtures are made FSC-certified walnut and ecoresin, “a non-toxic, sustainable material made from 40% recycled content”. The designer’s aim was to “produce a modern wilderness”, and I think they succeed. Although they look great in broad daylight, the true brilliance comes out at night when a slight transparency of the resin creates an interesting shadow play. I adore the ‘70s look and feel of the fixtures, which have the added benefit of the ‘00s ethical appeal.

The design team at Brave takes their green responsibilities very seriously. They source and manufacture in Brooklyn, use low-VOC paints and finishes, choose sustainable upholstery and opt for bamboo plywood where possible. The result is modular, multi-functional and durable furniture from Brooklyn, NY that’s sure to please aesthetically and ethically minded folk around the globe.
