Neil Young Hybridizes Classic Lincoln

I’m not a fan of buying old to make new. In fact, I’ll go a step further and say that I strongly disapprove. I think it should be a crime to buy 1920s Spanish style house and remove its period charm in order to put in modern conveniences. If you want modern, buy modern. Restoration yes, demolition no.

Which is why I’m puzzled by my support of Neil Young’s latest project — the singer-songwriter is having his classic 1960s Lincoln Continental Mark IV hybridized. Normally, I’d be opposed to removing the innards of a beautiful classic car and replacing them with newer technology. But in this case, what’s being removed is a veritable greenhouse-gas factory on wheels. Which makes it okay. Especially if the new electric-biodiesel version is expected to 100 miles per gallon.

Plus, I’m curious to see the movie. Young will be filming the hybridization process as a documentary to raise awareness of our various vehicular options. Granted, not all of us have the cash to put a new engine into a car that technically doesn’t need it, but if the film educates people on the advantages of hybrids, that’s definitely a good thing.

So, this is an addendum to the earlier rule: I’m not a fan of buying old to make new unless the old is a major contributor to global warming.

The car’s transformation will be performed by Jonathan Goodwin of H-Line Conversions. For more info, check this out.
