New Mexico Spaceport | Beam Us Up Scotty

It seems fitting that the state of America’s most notorious UFO sighting and crash-landing will be the home of the earth’s first spaceport. Just outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico, the Spaceport America building is set for construction and will house both a terminal for space private space flights and the New Mexico Spaceport Authority.

New Mexico governor Bill Richardson partnered with Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic to “capture the drama and mystery of space flight itself, articulating the thrill of space travel for the first space tourists.” The unique building, its location, and its mission will make it a must-see destination for the space-curious and will provide hangar space for spacecraft and astronauts.

Someone cue the sound of a needle scratching across an old vinyl LP. Are we really talking about a SPACEport? Last I checked, there weren’t any private space vehicles, just some ambiguous X PRIZE sponsored by the eccentric knight of Queen Elizabeth II’s court. And the New Mexico government is in on it? That’s a bit much for even the most forward thinking people to swallow.

No matter what your thoughts of private space travel may be, however, the spaceport building is something to consider. It’s built into the landscape rather than on top of it and incorporates all of the latest green technology for it to maintain a small footprint (but jet fuel is pretty dang un-“G”). The design has earned a LEED platinum rating and there was a conscious decision to make the building an example for the future.

Space or not, there are many interesting features that new airports could use to lighten the impact of long-distance travel.
