New Seal Hunt Regulations Far From Humane

Someone recently told me their idea of joke: a baby seal walks into a club.
Not only did I not “get it”, once it was explained to me, I didn’t think it was funny. Now after reading about Canada’s annual seal hunt, I think it’s deplorable.
According to an article on The NewsMarket, the Canadian government announced that their new regulations would “improve humaneness” in the annual slaughter of harp seals. But the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) quickly fired back, declaring these policies “dishonest” and “inadequate”. The IFAW says a panel of veterinarians stated that “seals should be stunned, checked for irreversible unconsciousness, and bled out immediately to ensure humane slaughter.”
But if you want to be even more humane than that, how about not hunting the poor seals at all? The IFAW’s website says that “over 95% of the seals killed during this hunt are just days or weeks old”. I don’t see how that can be considered humane in any situation. But for these newborns to be clubbed or shot and then skinned alive for their pelts and left to die beneath the ice is beyond cruel. And for it to be subsidized by the Canadian government – or any government, for that matter – should be criminal.
Canada has given the go-ahead to kill 275,000 harp seals. If you want to make your voice heard, you can take action at IFAW’s website.
