The Bigger Greener Meaner and Here Forever Alternative Energy Choice, Nuclear Of Course!

Florida’s courting nukes. Maybe you read my article about Bush speaking at the Renewable Energy Conference, calling for a resurgence in nuclear (pronounced noo-klee-ur) technology to solve America’s energy crisis. The good folks in Florida, led Bush boy Jeb, are taking the ball of uranium and running with it.

Two Florida energy companies, Progress Energy and Florida Power and Light have designs in place to install several new plants in the coming years, including one recently approved by the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission. With ever-peaking oil prices and CO2 emissions in sharp focus these days, nuclear energy is making a comeback. Both the feds and state governments are helping with tax breaks and allowing power companies to charge up front for the cost of production.

But wait just a damn minute! There’s a reason no new plants have been built in the last 30 years – since the 3-Mile-Island near meltdown. The long-term problems of nuclear power remain unsolved, unless we look for more American Indian holy sites to bury the waste THAT NEVER GOES AWAY.

And what dollars and cents? Estimated costs range from $14 to $24 billion dollars to build a new plant and will take 10+ years to get it up and running. For perspective, 10 years ago, the internet was still in its infancy. Imagine what can happen in the next 10 years.

It seems that all those in power are suffering from a collective closed head wound. There are technologies that are clean, renewable, and available to go online in months, not years. All for a fraction of the cost and without charging consumers up front for a dead technology. Now more than ever, it’s time for a change.

Besides, isn’t Florida called the Sunshine state? How about a headline like “The Sunshine state backs up its solar claim.”
