Organic Cotton’s Top Models

Last year I wrote an article on child slave labor. “The real price of non organic cotton” was based on a report from the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF). To learn that over one million children across the globe are forced into cotton production – sacrificing their education, health and innocence – to satisfy and industry worth $40 billion annually was a real eye opener.
Now the Environmental Justice Foundation is leading an international campaign to clean up cotton production by enlisting renowned designers Luella Bartley, Christian Lacroix, Betty Jackson and Katharine Hamnett to design “exclusive prints for a collection of T-shirts produced on organic and fairly traded cotton”.
And who better to wear these tees than twenty of the top supermodels, including Irina Lazareanu, Coco Rocha, Catherine McNeil, Caroline Trentini, Siri Tollerød and Behati Prinsloo, all of whom were photographed by fashion photographer Eric Guillemain for the “Pick Your Cotton Carefully” campaign.
Existing supporters of the ethical tees include Lily Cole, Erin O’Connor, KT Tunstall and Peaches Geldof. One glance and you can see why. Designed around the theme of “childhood, lost innocence and hope”, the shirts are laden with designer appeal — and I’m sure they’re bound to become collectors items in no time.
Check out the site and test out your fashionista skills by seeing if you can pair the designer to their design. The Hamnett and Lacriox ones should be easy peasy.
