I think the key to this thing we call G Living is to just dive right in. Open up your eyes, let in all the beauty around you. It’s there waiting to be re-discovered, waiting to be seen a new again. And nothing for me brings in the joy of just being more than cutting through the air on the back of a bike.
I personally have two bikes, one electric, the A2B by Ultramotor and one carbon fiber road bike by Kestrel. I love them both equally but they perform two very different transportation task for me. The Kestrel is about being connected to the road, feeling every bump, feeling the power of your own body moving you down the road. It’s about being a powerful force, which is an amazing feeling, that is if you are not too concerned about how you might smell once the ride has come to an end.
This opens up a whole world of destinations and more importantly it enables you to dress for the occasion and not the ride.
Now the A2B electric bike is a whole other story. It’s about taking you for a ride. The bike is the powerful one. Your job is to hold on and enjoy the ride, There is no effort, no worries, and most importantly no sweating. What is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the word dirty? Sexy Hot? Madonna? Maybe you visualize old rich men with half naked 20 something girls. What ever popped into your dirty little mind, I bet it wasn’t soap. When the guys at Method (the modern green soap company) think about dirty, they think of nothing but soap and how to make it cleaner, greener and look sexier. Yes sexier, so some of your dirty thoughts where on the right track.
It is this type of clean sexy thinking, that enabled the Method Guys (Eric Ryan and Adam Lowry) to build the 7th fastest growing company in the United States, and the fastest growing company in California. The fastest growing company in California, the home of Apple Computer, and a valley full of tech geeks popping out the latest electronic gadgets that will power our homes and do all the thinking for us, beat out by a couple of guys making soap in their bathtub? Come on, really?! Well according to Adam, that is exactly correct and they fully intend to keep growing their business at record speed, while continuing the path to make their company and their products even greener.
Your standard floor cleaners, soaps, dusters, furniture polishes, glass cleaners and bleaches are packed full of chemicals that do more harm then good.
Why is running a green soap company a big deal?
Well, if you look at their competition, you quickly realize these guys are not only making a green company, they are revolutionizing how the standard cleaning products are made. Leaving behind the heavy chemical based products and the mindset that produced those products in the first place, and in the process, they are turning the entire industry on it’s head.
I never post lyrics from a songs, but this morning I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the realization that the world at large hasn’t got a clue. We go on with our lives, thinking everything will stay the same, when in fact there is no constant, everything is forever changing. Sometimes for the betterment of some, but almost always to the degeneration of most. This is especially true for the environment and non-humans among us. I think Bob Dylan’s said it best in his song “The Times They Are A-Changin”.
Oh when oh when will the winds of change finally sweep in the end of pain. Oh when oh when will humans put down their chains and pick up their brains. Oh when oh when, will G Living be more than just a passing phase. Oh when oh when will our children learn compassion and love are more than lyrics on a page.
The video below is of Sinead O’Connor singing Bob Dylans song on the Late Late show in Ireland earlier this year. The first thing you will notice, is that she is almost un-reconizable. She has filled out just a bit, looking very Irish I must say and the baldness is a thing of the past. Maybe Britney Spears ruined it for her. With that said, I love Sinead and if you don’t have her Throw Down Your Arms album, go get it right now. It is a beautiful album.
On the show she also talks about her life long depression, her children and her issues with the Catholic Church. You know, their policy of protecting child molesting catholic priest. Come on Sinead, whats wrong with that?

It amazes me how little attention the value of balanced pH has garnered from the mainstream medical world. Positive acid/alkaline balance is one of the most important factors in athletic performance. In my opinion, by disregarding this fact, sport supplement manufactures have significantly reduced the effectiveness of their products. In fact some of the energy bars currently on the market are the worst offenders. Processed for the sake of shelf life and convenience, and consequently denatured and acid forming, many energy bars are not much more than disguised junk food.
When acidic forming food is consumed, starting with digestion and continuing until elimination, it produces toxins that the body must deal with. Denatured foods are toxin producers and as a result have the greatest negative impact on pH balance within the body. Highly refined and processed, denatured foods are void of any usable nutrients, yet retain their caloric value the worst combination. Toxins in the body lead to premature aging through cell degeneration. Aside from food, most prescription drugs, artificial sweeteners and synthetic vitamin and mineral supplements are extremely acid forming.

Athletes in peak training are the most affected by acidosis. Vigorous exercise creates stress in terms of muscle trauma cased by the workout. Physiologically speaking, hard exercise is the stressor but equally important is rest and recovery. The correct balance of theses two opposing elements is the recipe for growth. Already physically stressed, many athletes also must deal with various types of performance anxiety. An increased metabolism is yet another factor athletes are met with, further lowering pH. Furthermore, athletes require more food in general with an emphasis on protein to aid muscle recovery.

I was at the Queen Victoria Market yesterday and I had a chat with an Organic farmer who is also obseesed with peas. Who would have thought? The coversation started off with how meditative it was to shell peas for an hour or so… and how it could also be agitating if you were a type that had no patience for shelling peas. I asked him if he had any tips for people who like to plant peas. He said: “Organic gardeners eager to plant vegetables after a long winter must add peas to the garden plot. Peas grow quickly and aren’t bothered by many pests or diseases.”

This is V here: It’s Monday and starting today and ending today we will post a new salad every Monday. And now on to Alice’s recipe:
Fast, super-easy, hearty and full of flavors, this is the perfect salad for the late-summer, early-fall season. Refreshing and satisfying, colorful and elegant, this fruit and vegetable salad works amazingly well as a light lunch but you can certainly serve it at a dinner party, just make sure you prepare it right before serving time as the vegetables -and fruits- can get too soggy. The main components of this dish are typical summer fruits -such as fresh white peaches, figs and raspberries- that are usually eaten on their own or in a fruit salad. Here, I combine them with green beans, rocket and fresh herbs -thyme and chives- and the result is a tasty, sweet and sour salad which is a great feast of tastes and textures, beautiful to look at but also good for your health.
Balsamic vinegar complements all the different fruity and herby flavors.

A while back we featured a small but well designed house in Houston Texas of all places, made out of mostly shipping containers. This version of a container house was different that most because it actually feels good. I don’t know what I mean by that other than a lot of container house are how do you say… hard, bare… build without design in mind. I mean the images of this place stand up to any well designed home and I am sure that is what the Dwell Magazine editors saw too and decided not only to do a story but to feature this special home on the cover (featured story on dwell.com).
Yes, the magazine issue came out back in 2009 but I just saw it. I know sad. But better let than never is what I say. So here it is, a little snippet of the dwell article, a few photos and yes a link back to our post On the Cordell Shipping Container House.

I’ve had an extensive relationship with tea since I can remember. Not just the substance of tea, but more specifically the actual event of a tea. Thanks to my chic and antique-obsessed mother, we had a collection of old handmade teacups, vintage silver and dainty tea platters. Almost every special occasion was some extensive tea party with scones, quiche, sandwiches, etc. I have the best memories of these teas, and how far back in my life I had enjoyed them.
Even for my birthday 2 years ago, I had a tea party with my sister and mother while Nina Simone blasted in the background and gluten-free scones were aplenty. The tradition has not yet died in my family. So, when I first found Alexis of Teaspoons and Petals I was enriched with her delicious tea combinations, knowledge and quaintness. She is like the saint of twitter, posting things like, “Crisp fall air is streaming in through the windows. warming up with a cup of delicate, sweet sencha.” She makes me dream of rustic cabins, tea cups and fabulous tea blends. She is a talented writer (and consultant), so it’s nothing to her to create a complete tea-centric atmosphere just from a mere 140 characters (or less). Not to mention her unbelievably adorable Haiku Teacups combined with lyrics of Jazz Era vocalists. I’m a huge huge huge fan of singers like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Mamie Smith, Ida Cox, Dinah, etc. I almost died when I saw these adorable cups with lyrics from my favorite women. Her site includes her unique simple syrup blends, like Lavender Blossom. I can’t say enough about her, but needless to say, I have a huge crush.
I was so honored when she contacted me for an interview. Talking about tea with a tea goddess?! OF course. The interview and recipe were featured on her site last week, with the sweetest write-up. I did not deserve anything she said about me. I was so happy to collaborate with her, and I know we will continue to do so in the future.
Man, I missed those skinny bitches. Especially G Living pal, Rory Freedman, who along with former model, Kim Barnouin, have crafted a very tasty niche for themselves with their (how shall I put it) “unique” voice. After the outrageous success of Skinny Bitch — which with help from the Skinniest Bitch of all climbed its way stiletto after stiletto up the New York Times bestseller list and refused to budge — the girls are back with their follow-up, Skinny Bitch in the Kitch.
The tone is set from their opening gambit: “What’s better than eating? (If you say ‘sex’ you’re either a liar or a pervert). The answer is: Nothing! There’s nothing better than eating!” The book then serves up 75+ healthy plant-based recipes including: the Big Ass Veggie Burrito, made with whole wheat tortillas and guaranteed not to give you one; and Chocolate Suicide Cake, which incorporates unsweetened apple sauce so as not to leave you depressed after eating it. (Preferably not whole thing.)
The recipes are broken up into handy sections with deliciously imaginative titles, everything from Bitchin’ Breakfasts to PMS (Pissy Mood Snacks), Down Home Cookin’ to Happy Endings (Desserts). While Rory and Kim consider their recipes to be pretty “normal”, you will need to stock up with some skinny bitch staples: Bragg’s Amino Acid (soy sans MSG), Coconut oil (as a substitute for Olive Oil) and Agave (nectar of the Gods).
So, take it from the SBs: stop cooking crap and start looking hot! It’s hard to argue with that.
Everyone on the Planet knows I love Soko and if you don’t, well, you must have be dropped down a well for the last few years or something! So, now you know, I love SOKO, the hot oh so sexy, French singer/actress who’s lyrics tend to be raw and to the point. You know, from the heart basic stuff, with a bit of an edge. For example, in her first hit, “I’ll Kill Her” she basically sings about a bitch who stoled her man, and she is out to kill her. Yes, it warmed my heart too!
Now in the two video gems I just discovered, Soko, gives Paris (France) the big middle finger for laughing at people who love animals and tells a guy in a Bar, stick it in me quickly… it would be fun. But for some reason the guy just wants to talk… oh no this isn’t sounding like it’s going well.

Ever since making our savoury avocado truffles, we’ve been thinking about creating a dessert version of this much loved dish. Here is a quick and simple way to prepare an elegant and challenging dessert.
The “truffles” are filled with a light chocolate mousse and coated with cacao nibs and ground pistachios. The silky flavours of avocado and chocolate are complemented by the textural, crunchy coat.
Late summer and early fall in the produce isle means grapes, all kinds of them. We’ve been thoroughly enjoying grapes for about two months now, making Muscadine grape juice almost daily and obsessing over a heavenly fig, grape, and cinnamon shake (let us know if you’d like the recipe).
Concord grapes are a special treat. They contain seeds, which nowadays seems rare and exciting. Most grapes sold in the States are seedless – a true shame considering the myriad health benefits of grape seeds. The Concord grape sorbet, besides completing the dish with beautiful jewel tones, adds a nice amount of sweetness to the mild tastes of the truffle and bitter notes of the cacao nibs. The sorbet tastes a bit like grape jelly and serves as an exciting companion that pleases both eyes and palate.
