We all know how big American Idol has become and what a machine it is. So the show has decided to use a little of that massive media power for some good. A mass of jellyfish proved an unlikely thorn in the side of the Japanese nuclear industry this week when they choked a pipe, which feeds cooling water into a coastal plant.
Most of us like to travel and see the world we are living on. We want to explore far off distant places, see historical sites, and have relaxing sun filled days on beautiful beaches. The problem with those desires are we have to get there some how, and we like to get there fairly quickly. So, we buy a ticket on one of the many airlines, which will whisk us there in just a few hours. Or maybe you are the business traveler, who travels 10 times or more than any average vacationer. Did you know every time you jump on a plane for that business trip or vacation, you are paying the airlines to dump tons of CO2 Global warming gas into the atmosphere? A lot of CO2 and in fact, by 2050, emissions from planes are expected to become one of the largest contributors to global warming, according to the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, an independent group of scientists that advises the British government. If you have spent anytime looking for “G” earth friendly, stylish shoes, you know there isn’t a lot out there yet. The choices are limited but people like Annie Mohaupt are working on changing that forever. Annie, a formally trained architect, designed her first pair of shoes for the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago, in 2005. â€œThey were built like skateboards made out of bent plywood. It was like an epiphany.â€? Five months later she had quit her job as an architect and was making shoes full-time from the basement of her Chicago apartment.
Now this is not a story about the newest coolest “G” organic fabrics. No this is a story about the past, the automotive past that is. Designer Kim White specializes in recycling a treasure trove of fabrics she found in a warehouse from the 1970’s. This seems to be pretty big news across the web. Vail Resorts plans to build the first Green Ski Resorts with the the new Leed “Neighborhood Development” certification program. The project is called Ever Vail and will be cost about 1 billion and be built on 9.5 acres. On the cover of their site, they also has a video news release declaring they are moving all their energy needs over to wind power by buying renewable energy credits from the power company. They will be purchasing 152,000 megawatt-hours of wind energy. If approved for development, Ever Vail will be the largest LEED-certified project for resort use in North America and one of the earliest developments to come under the LEED Neighborhood Development certification program.
