Petra Nemcova Says No To Fish

Would somebody please give Petra Nemcova a break? The Czech supermodel has taken a very public stance on eradicating fish from her diet and all she’s getting is flak.
Her widely publicized quote, from Britain’s Closer magazine (via contactmusic.com), is “I recently became vegan because I’m going green and not eating fish. I became quite green… I have a very strong connection to nature… and I read that if we fish the way we fish, in 2048 there will be no more fish left, which is pretty soon. So it’s a statement.” And while the press has been having a field day, Petra’s absolutely correct.
According to Steve Palumbi of Stanford University (via BBC News): “Unless we fundamentally change the way we manage all the ocean species together, as working ecosystems, then this century is the last century of wild seafood.”
While it’s no secret that going from pescatarian to vegan is always a good choice healthwise and environmentally, the repercussions of our rapidly depleting fish stocks go far beyond the removal of salmon from the dinner menu or the closing of Red Lobster restaurants nationwide (which I personally don’t have a problem with). Wiping out fish affects the oceans and our planet as a whole.
“The image I use to explain why biodiversity is so important is that marine life is a bit like a house of cards,” says Boris Worm of Canada’s Dalhousie University (also quoted by the BBC). “All parts of it are integral to the structure; if you remove parts, particularly at the bottom, it’s detrimental to everything on top and threatens the whole structure.”
Whether or not Petra’s quote makes her sound… I don’t know… like a model, is beyond the point. Her heart is clearly in the right place, and not just in regards to the world’s fish supply. Since surviving the 2004 tsunami tragedy (which claimed the life of her fiancé), Petra has been doing her part to make the world a better place, most notably launching the Happy Hearts Fund, in order to help “children who’ve suffered loss or hardship as a result of natural, economic or health-related disasters.”
And hey, just being a model and offering her beauty for public consumption is good for the planet’s aesthetics. So, lay off, everybody.
