Looking for a meal in the San Diego area that’s healthy for you and the planet? Check out Lean & Green.
By anyone’s measure, this La Jolla, CA eatery is small in size. But one look at the clientele it attracts, and you’ll see that it’s large in vision.
On our most recent visit, we sat next to a former director of the Pritikin Center and author of a forthcoming book on medicine-free living. On another afternoon, there sat the founder of Good Earth restaurants (the original organic chain).
The lure of Lean & Green is that it’s quick, easy and strives to create the least amount of impact on the earth as possible. Proprietor Miguel Patterson believes that while most of us want to eat healthy foods and use environmentally friendly products, convenience often means grabbing fatty fast food from companies that utilize wasteful practices. The solution lies in restaurants such as his, places that put greater emphasis on the big picture, places that are looking strategically toward the future.
Patterson’s establishment is leading the San Diego environmental charge. The items on his menu are prepared with synthetic fertilizer-, herbicide- and pesticide-free ingredients, and all of his packaging and utensils are made from renewable, sustainable, compostable and biodegradable materials.
Not bad at all for a small walk up that seats less than forty.
And the food? Lean & Green’s smoothies, salads, soups and wraps — even the antioxidant shots — are full of flavor. The hearty brown lentil soup with carrots and celery is an ideal prelude to one of their ingredient-rich wraps. Their smoothies are all-natural and include the whimsically named Sprung Monkey (coffee, chocolate, bananas and cinnamon) and the floral sweetness of Peach Passion (peach nectar married with banana).
Look for Lean & Green as they take over the planet. Up next, a Hollywood location in 2008.
