Rockefeller Center’s Green LED Christmas

Every year in New York City’s Rockefeller Center, an enormous Christmas tree lights up the night sky, enticing tens of millions of locals and tourists into the spirit of Christmas.
This year’s tree, however, has an added message. For the first time since the tradition began in 1931, the illuminated towering evergreen will be greener than ever. Last Tuesday, a 365 panel solar array was unveiled on the roof of one of Rock Center’s buildings. These panels will help power the tree’s 30,000 lights, which have been switched to energy efficient LEDs.
According to an article on ABC News, these new bulbs “will reduce the display’s electricity consumption from 3,510 to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day. The daily savings is equal to the amount of electricity consumed by a typical 2,000-square-foot house in a month.”
In the same article, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the tree serves as a reminder of what can be done to make a difference, saying those who come from all across the globe to see the famous tree “will see an example of green leadership which may inspire them to make greener choices in their own lives.”
The tree lighting ceremony will take place Wednesday, November 28th. The tree will be lit through the first week in January and then the lumber will be used to build houses for Habitat For Humanity.
