Looking Back at Darfur. What happened, who was at the core of the violence and where do we go from here. Special Interview with Brian Steidle on Room101.
Brian Steidle, co-author of The Devil Came On Horseback, talks about his experiences in Western Sudan. Brain is a former U.S. Marine Captain and spent 6 months working for the African Union in Darfur as an observer. He took photos and wrote reports about the genocide taking place in front of his eyes. But no one seemed to care, so he took matters into his own hands. He left Sudan with the photos he had taken and headed back to the United States to raise the alarm. He joins G Living Host, Sarah Backhouse in our Room101.
Brian Steidle graduated with a B.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1999 and received a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantry officer. He completed his service with the USMC at the end of 2003 as a Captain.
He has worked in Central Sudan on the North-South ceasefire and was then invited to serve in Darfur as an unarmed military observer and U.S. representative to the African Union. He was one of only three Americans serving with a coalition of African countries monitoring the ceasefire.
Since Brian’s return from Darfur, he has spoken at over 500 public awareness events in communities and at universities across the country, including Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, UCLA, West Point, and the US Naval Academy.
Brian has met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick. He has testified in Congress and the UK Parliament on the current situation in Sudan using his photography as a method of proof and a mechanism for raising awareness of human rights violations and atrocities.
He has and continues to advise Non-Governmental Organizations on their current operations in Sudan and Chad. He has assisted think tanks and other advocacy groups in writing reports for their independent missions and has consulted DOS, SOCOM, EUCOM, AFRICOM, and DHS ICE on such subjects as intelligence gathering, NGO operations, AU effectiveness, war crimes, and Sudanese Government military operations. Most recently he assisted the ICC in their ongoing investigation of war crimes in Sudan.
Brian has co-authored, with his sister Gretchen Wallace his memoir, The Devil Came on Horseback: Bearing Witness to the Genocide in Darfur, which chronicles his time in Darfur and also is the subject of the Documentary Film by the same title.
