Shakira. This two time Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter is arguably best known for shaking her booty and non-lying hips with much alacrity on MTV. Lesser known are her philanthropic endeavors. In her role as UNICEF goodwill ambassador, this Latin lovely recently visited cyclone-ravaged areas in Bangladesh.
In the affected area of Mirajgoni, near Patuakhali, Shakira visited Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) “which was developed for displaced and psychologically imperiled children”. The performer participated in the distribution of family kits and warm clothing. Shakira also visited UNICEF education projects in rural parts of the country. “I came to Bangladesh to see the impact of the cyclone and to learn about UNICEF’s approach to education,” she said. “We visited a variety of education programs and I came away with a clear sense that education is a powerful tool to improve people’s lives. By making a small investment in these children, we can give them the opportunity they deserve — and we can build a better, safer world.”
Shakira joined UNICEF back in 2003 at age 26, making her the youngest goodwill ambassador ever. Other celebrity UNICEF ambassadors include Ricky Martin and Amitabh Bachchan. Hmmm, maybe the booty shaking thing is related after all.
